I think it's pretty clear: separately, the two halves of a couple are great people. But when they get together, they just can't seem to make it work and, in fact, begin to sour one another. It's like a relationship that ends mutually because it simply isn't working out for either person, even though on paper there are plenty of common interests and seemingly matching personalities.
