I felt a stutter and a waiver
Cutting like a razor
Like fire through the snow
Then straight down to the bone
She creeps up like a spider
Then wants you deep inside her
She turns you into stone
A twisted little show

That's how it was all to begin
'Cause good girls they like to sin
Way back at the starting line
When Eve was on Adam's mind
And he was the first to go
In search of the great unknown
And falling yet again
'Cause good girls they like to sin

You are a hero and survivor
Your eyes are getting tired
There's claw marks up your spine
It happens all the time
Those silent evil daughters
Like sirens on the water
You've been the perfect crime
It happens all the time

That's how it was all to begin
'Cause good girls they like to sin
Way back at the starting line
When Eve was on Adam's mind
And he was the first to go
In search of the great unknown
And falling yet again
'Cause good girls they like to sin

Good girls, they like to sin
Falling yet again
Good girls, they like to sin
Good girls, they like to sin

That's how it was all to begin
'Cause good girls they like to sin
Way back at the starting line
When Eve was on Adam's mind
And he was the first to go
In search of the great unknown
And falling yet again
'Cause good girls they like to sin

I hear "I felt a starter and a waiver" "she creeps UP like a spider" and "a twisted little show." It's a good chance that he says "when EVE was on Adam's mind."

This song is awesome, so catchy. Awesome backing music during the verses. And Tom's extra tom-y voice. haha

I think this song is clever, obviously about sex. Good girls are not so innocent when it comes to it, and it's been like that since the beginning. Great name, "Snake Charmer" haha

    Song Meaning

Favorite song off the new record. The song is about falling in love with a girl, and having her toy with you and make you chase her. She loves the chase, and she's giving wrong impressions because she likes to feel loved, even though she has no feelings for the guy. Here's my analysis:

"I felt a stutter and a waiver, cutting like a razor Like fire through the snow, then straight down to the bone"

The guy knows he likes the girl. She seems to like him back but he's not so sure. Something seems off and she's giving mixed signals. He can feel this "cutting like a razor" straight down to the bone.

"She creeps up like a spider, then wants you deep inside her She turns you into stone, a twisted little show"

Again with the mixed signals. She gives wrong impressions and teases with you because she likes being chased. She creeps around you like a spider, giving you the impression that she is into you. Then it all comes crashing down right when you think you've got her. She turns you into a twisted little show, a mess and wreck of emotions as you realize she's not into you at all.

"That's how it was to all begin, cause good girls they like to sin, Way back at the starting line, when Eve was on Adam's mind."

Love this line. This shows you aren't the first guy to fall for this girls trap. This has been going on for all time because this is just what "girls do." Eve was on Adam's mind because they were the only humans alive, so naturally Adam "liked" Eve. You may seem to like "the good girl", but the "sin" is that she loves the chase and may be leading you on.

"And he was the first to go, in search of the great unknown, And falling yet again, cause good girls they like to sin"

Adam was the first guy to "go" and fall into the girls trap. Even though the story of Adam and Eve isn't a love story, the parallels are eerily beautiful. Adam fell for her, but Eve sinned when she ate the apple. Much like a guy fell for a girl, but she sinned when she led him on. Adam was the first "guy" to fall for this, when he went searching into the great unknown (pursuing a girl).

"You are a hero and survivor, your eyes are getting tired, There's claw marks up your spine, it happens all the time"

Tom is now speaking to "the guy". You're a hero to the rest of us guys. You fell for a girl but she led you on and broke your heart. But you're still here and alive. A survivor, but you're tired and exhausted from the experience and the "chase". The claw marks are your "battle wounds", and it happens to more people than you think.

"Those silent evil daughters, like sirens on the water, You've been the perfect crime, it happens all the time"

Eve's "daughters", being the rest of the female population. He compares them to sirens, evil creatures. You, the guy, were the perfect crime. She led you on, felt loved, and then broke your heart. She had it planned perfectly, but you were the victim.

Love love love this song. Let me know what you guys think.

well the way i see it, it's something about how what men does all begin with what the girls do/behave. for example,

When Eve on adam's mind - eve is the one who told adam to eat the illegal fruit before both of them are thrown onto earth. at first, adam don't want to do it when the devil ask him to do so, but when eve told him to do so, he eat it anyway.

Good girls who like to sin- i believe that it's something like when girls behave so good toward guys that they always succeeded on pursuing the guys to do bad things. which in return the consequences only effect the guys.

You've been the perfect crime It happens all the time- the girls are the perfect crime because they are the one that creep into mind and influence the guys to do bad things.

well, i don't know if my take on this song make sense or not, but i think there is a truth to it.

    cheers guys. =)

toowens has the correct lyrics up there ^

But yeah, I think this song is clever. For essentially writing a song partly about Adam and Eve fucking, blink did it so well. haha I like how the original title of this song was "Genesis," as in The Book of Genesis. I'm not extremely familiar with the story of Adam and Eve, but I believe it was satan who disguised himself as a snake and convinced the two to sin and eat the forbidden fruit. So I think 'Snake Charmer' is an obvious reference to that, and, what at least I like to think, somewhat a sexual pun as well.

Favorite song on this album, very unique but at the same time something about it reminds me of so doc their older stuff.

I don't think this is about any particular story. I think it goes back to some of their older themes where they talk about girls from the point of view of average boy or young man. Girls are almost these mystical or angelic beings while the boy feels like a stupid idiot. This is a bit of a more grown up version of that. The girl is a woman she is a tempest that will bring the wants the guy to please her (sexually and otherwise) but will leave him ruined (of course she always appears as the good girl). Of course still being the dumb boy the guy will follow her to his ruin.

We see this with the "sirens on the water" the weird a of Greek mythology enticing sailors to their death. Then of course Adam literally followed eve to his ruin by being enticed by her and eating of the fruit which got him kicked out of paradise.

The "hero and survivor" part is about those who have been dragged down that path and have made it out. But of course they don't make it with out scares and after effects. "Claw marks down your spine" of course refers to the after effect of dorm really awesome sex but also the emotional/mental marks she left on him. "Your eyes are getting tired" she has exhausted him emotionally and mentally. Anyone who has been with a girl like that I think could understand that.

It is so awesome how the intro could directly come from The Cure's DISINTEGRATION (btw one of the most awesomestest albums ever). That's a nice tribute and I guess it's intentional.

Instead of "I felt a starter at a waiver" it is "I felt a stutter and a waiver"

Instead of "Last night, it was to all begin" it is "That's how it was to all begin"

Instead of "cause good girls, they like to sin" it is "Cause good girls who like to sin"

The main idea is definitely about Adam and Eve. Everything is up to the listener really. But everything here is valid and sounds believable.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
