Pieces Lyrics
You're not running just enough of a wreck
To hold the hurt heart everybody expects
And I know you wrote a history of making a mess
Misunderstood's an understatement at best
How long, how long will you demand my sympathy
We all know hurt so why do you feel the need to
PRE-CHORUS:
Put on a pretty face, give them a pretty taste
No one's buying it anyway
CHORUS:
You're so tired trying to rewind the mess you've made of your own mind
But the pieces won't pick up themselves you know
You can fight just like you've been taught, it won't undo the life you've got
'Cause the pieces won't pick up themselves you know
You're not running just enough of a wreck
To hold the hurt heart everybody expects
And I know you wrote a history of making a mess
Misunderstood's an understatement at best
You say you try, you're after something better
It doesn't show, you're still not put together
PRE-CHORUS
CHORUS
Everybody knows liars never make it for long
I am getting close, I can see just what's going on
Everybody knows, everybody knows (Whoah-oh, woah-oh)
I remember what you were before you gave it away
You've never been the type to watch the pieces fall where they may
And now you've let it go
But I know you know (Woah-oh, woah-oh)
CHORUS
To hold the hurt heart everybody expects
And I know you wrote a history of making a mess
Misunderstood's an understatement at best
How long, how long will you demand my sympathy
We all know hurt so why do you feel the need to
Put on a pretty face, give them a pretty taste
No one's buying it anyway
You're so tired trying to rewind the mess you've made of your own mind
But the pieces won't pick up themselves you know
You can fight just like you've been taught, it won't undo the life you've got
'Cause the pieces won't pick up themselves you know
To hold the hurt heart everybody expects
And I know you wrote a history of making a mess
Misunderstood's an understatement at best
You say you try, you're after something better
It doesn't show, you're still not put together
I am getting close, I can see just what's going on
Everybody knows, everybody knows (Whoah-oh, woah-oh)
I remember what you were before you gave it away
You've never been the type to watch the pieces fall where they may

When I've been in a mental state the only friend I had - Jesus. He's fixed my messed up mind and healed my broken heart. The truth is, when you get let down by everyone and there's no one left around, you start wondering what this life's about. I've had a long history of drug abuse and been in a lot of mess. I couldn't see the end. At the end of the day I've found Jesus and he found me. I don't care what others think.

To me, this song is about someone who was hurt in their life. They never stop talking about that hurt, basically demanding sympathy from everyone. Now, the song is saying "Just get over it. We all know what hurt is, but we've picked up the pieces and gotten over it. We can't fix your life for you, and it won't fix on it's own. It's your turn to pick up the pieces." This reminds me of an old frind of mine. He always demanded sympathy for his problems instead of fixing them, and instead of getting sympathy from everyone, he lost all of his closest friends, including me.
This comes across as the accusations of those around her combined with the voices in her own head. When you're dealing with a mental illness, a person in many ways can hide it very well and look so put together to everyone around them. But when a person is with themselves and they only have their internal voices and people to talk to, shit can get very accusatory.
In addition, the worst thing to tell a person dealing with a history of abuse is "get over it". As though it's just that easy, just miraculously healing from years of trauma and decades of the aftermath.
To me this song is about a person who is hurt and broken but refuses to fight for themselves. They have friends that are trying to help them but all they do is wine and expect everyone to fix them and take care of them. but there never going to be OK unless they actually try to help themselves.
I think it's about someone who is hurting but isn't able to do anything to fix her/his life..but this person knows she/he has to do something
My interpretation of the song is that this person is putting on an act(put on a pretty face, give 'em a pretty taste) while those who do know that the person is depressed(You're so tired trying to unwind the mess you've made of your own mind)( How long, how long will you demand my sympathy)have tried to help them see their pain and that they're not actually trying to help themselves, they expect others to do it for them and the person says their trying when they're not.(Everybody knows liars never make it for long)(you say you try, your'e after something better. It doesn't show: your'e still not put together)
