Slaves to Substance Lyrics

You're all slaves
So sit back bitch, what the fuck's it gonna be?
Are you listening to me?
It's your dependence robbing innocence,
is this really who you wanted to be?
Rock Bottom is your wakeup call (2x)
Oh my god you're pitiful, your dependence robbing innocence
That makes you a slave to substance, eeah!
Slaves, you're fucking worthless
You see you've hit rock bottom, you see everything is wrong
You see you've hit rock bottom (slaves in shackles)
You see you've hit rock bottom, right now your mind is gone
You see you've hit rock bottom (slaves in shackles)
Slaves! To substance eeah! That makes you a slave!
You're fucking worthless!
I'm gonna sit back with my shades on
watching you make all the same mistakes we all went through
Everything that I've been through that I regret,
I'm watching you do now ever since we met (3x)
It's your dependence robbing innocence,
is this really who you wanted to be?
Slaves in shackles! Never to be set free.
That makes you a slave! (2x) to substance, eeah!
That makes you a slave! You're fucking worthless!

(And now you see that you've hit the bottom,
and now you see everything is wrong
And now you see that you've hit the bottom,
and now you see that your mind is gone
And now you see that you've hit the bottom,
and now you see everything is wrong
And now you see that you've hit the bottom,
that's why I wrote this song!)

For me it reminds me of how I went through a tough time.... I used to smoke and don't bad things, but I can relate. I was at rock bottom. I thought I was going to be one of those bad people who just was going to fail trying, so I started. I was only 13 when I had started and I was getting through a bad habit. I had everyone disappointed at me which only made it worse, I had become addicted to it. I was deteriorating to a severe depression and a deadly addiction. Never a good mix. At that time I never knew who Suicide Silence was, but I was on youtube and I saw this song beside the video I was watching. I was curious, but I never knew this would lead me to get better. After a while I was obsessed with this song. But I started looking more into it and I found that this was just like me. I was in the middle of smoking and I just looked at it in front of me and threw it away. Now I'm 14, I'm better than I ever was. A comparison to my life from then to now is that I have a boyfriend now, loving friends, basically doing better than I was before all just because of this song.

Memory

@Violet101 I personally think this is the whole point of the song. It is trying to send a message to people (who were in your situation). It wants you (or those people) to wake up and break free of their addiction.

To me, I think the song's meaning is about the government. The song does began with "you're all slaves" and it has "watching the same mistakes we all went through" The government is always getting what they want and we don't. So technically, we're all slaves. That's what I think at least...

Song Meaning

@DeathcoreGirl5 The repeated use of the term "substance", and lines such as "hit rock bottom" are all direct inferences to drug abuse though. I know it is up to an individual to interpret it how they will, but the obvious context is drug abuse (using cliched lines in regards to drug addiction I think was even the bands intent to ensure it wasn't interpreted any other way).

The song is named slaves to substance. It's definitely about a battle with addiction to drugs.

I really like this song it seems to obviously be about someones battle with hard drugs and the impact it has on others, im a big fan of the band Alice in Chains this songs lyrics reminds me of their original lead singer Layne Staley.

My Interpretation

@AiC95 not cryptic enough for Layne's lyrics :) "Like peanut butter on the brain"

Not everyone is addicted to drugs. Mitch begins the song with "Your all slaves" I would like to think that his song has a more sadistic meaning to it. The government hand in hand with mass corporations have created a prison for that is totally invisible to the population, but it is there. If you can't get anything and everything you want, but the people that are governing always get what they want. It is unjust, and you are being governed by criminals. You are essentially a slave to the government and mass corporations. Why can't people see this? Also the word substance doesn't specifically mean drugs. Implying that you are a slave to substance could mean that you are addicted to something, but that something could be anything i.e wealth, beauty, drama, food. Hence the term Shoppaholic.

My Interpretation

You're exactly right.

Substance abuse refers directly to drugs...

@bbyilluminate the lyrics don't really give much credit to this interpretation though. The repeated use of the word "substance" definitely infers drugs. Then the lines such as "hit rock bottom", "same mistakes", "robbing innocence" are all common terms that infer drug use. I'd say if anything the song is a little cliched in it's drug addiction references, and to really difficult to interpret it any other way than abusing drugs.
