Empty Glass Lyrics

I lost my wedding ring down the kitchen sink
Now it's glimmering somewhere far away
And I'm sitting here with an empty glass
Waiting for the day to swallow me whole
I'm holding on to nothing

Sold my wedding ring to another man
Who was drunk in lust far away from home
Now I'm waking up with an empty hand
Trying to buy something to take me away
The page I've written
I'll sleep in the space where no one's breathing
We'll trade all our memories for forgetting

To me, this song explains how Geoff feels post-marriage. (Is he married?). Hes become something he didn't see coming. The feelings hes experiencing are not the feeling he expected. He sold his wedding ring to another man (him), a different man than he was a few years ago.

I could be wrong. Geoff is poetic as hell, i love it.

"And I'm sitting here with an empty glass, Waiting for the day to swallow me whole, I'm holding on to nothing," To me means that he feels empty, or lonely. He has lost everything that he cares about, and has nothing to hold on to.

I think Geoff might be singing about how people indulge themselves in material things to distract them from emotional pain of feeling alone, to "take [them] away" from the hurt. These could be harmless things like clothes or fast food, or they could be more dangerous things like alcohol, or drugs (prescription or street).

Very powerful song regardless of whether I'm right or wrong.
