Benfica Lyrics

Some might say that
To win's not all that it's about
It's the macho thing to say
But there is nothing more true
Or natural than wanting to win

There's nothing more to life
Nothing more to life

this song is dedicated to a portuguese football club! Noah Lennox lives in Portugal's capital, Lisbon! in Lisbon there's one of the biggest football club in the planet! that club is: Sport Lisboa e BENFICA! Noah Lennox always loved football even before coming to live in Portugal, however, when he went to see a Benfica's game, he felt in love with the club and, after knowing the history of the club and the meaning of the club for the portuguese people, he said to himself: "I think I'm going to be an Benfica supporter" and since then, he is obsessed with the club and this song shows the love that he has got to Benfica, and the lyrics talk about winning because Benfica is one of the most successful clubs on the entire planet! Benfica is much more than a club, it's a religion and, being an "Benfiquista" (that's what a Benfica fan is called) it's a feeling that it can't be explained, it's a thing that only a fan can feel and that's what Noah Lennox is, I mean, he is a "Benfiquista" and being a "Benfiquista" is to have a huge flame on the soul with a light that conquer who feels that! Benfica is that and much more and that's the meaning of this song, even if in an abstract way...

@samucka I knew of Benfica and I enjoy Panda Bear but I never saw evidence that he actually meant the club until now. Thank you for clearing that up.

It's interesting to consider phrases like "epic fail" and "for the win". These make sense because they're so true, there's nothing more to life than winning or losing (though of course that's a matter of what rules apply, just one's own or something bigger).

This song is transcendent of whatever genre/label people are going to try and affix to it. I'll probably post a more thorough analysis of my interpretation of it; but for now I believe it could be referring to Noah's creative struggle during the making of the album. He has said in a few interviews now that he compares the making of music to sport (specifically golf) in which you are competing against yourself and always trying to best your last effort. I imagine there's probably a lot more to it than that simple take on it...

This song is a perfect coda to this album, and it takes a pretty detached listener to not give in to the music when the song builds up to that moment when he first slips into falsetto.

i agree with everybody, but ajbolt seems like a crazy person. it totally feels like the score to the finale of some late 80s/early 90s sports movie. the greatest one never made. i mean he named it benfica for a reason, right? i figured him for a sporting fc fan myself
