Father Lyrics
And he is screaming and crying for help
And maybe halfway through it has more to do with me killing him
Then it ever did protecting myself
And I believe that yeah, dad, maybe no one is perfect
But it seems that you were pushing your luck
It just sucks it played out like this:
A terrible movie and you can tell none of the actors even give a fuck
Can I sleep in your bed?
And when I crawl out in the morning,
Can I stay inside your head?
And I was just more like real life
And you were okay, okay as a girlfriend
But I was just more like his wife
I'll do the pushups
I'll wear the makeup
I'll do whatever he wants all night
'Cause you were okay, okay as a girlfriend
But I was just more like real life.
took something that did not belong to him
And that is why today there is an eagle in my veins
I am part Native American
And I am leaving as soon as I come,
As soon as I come you will probably forget my name
I hope I fall asleep at the wheel and crash my car (on the way home)
Or I could just stay here, because
Can I sleep in your bed?
And when I crawl out in the morning,
Can I stay inside your head?
And I was just more like real life
And you were okay, okay as a girlfriend
But I was just more like his wife
I'll wear the makeup
I'll do the pushups
I'll do whatever he wants all night
'Cause you were okay, okay as a girlfriend
But I was just more like real life.
(More like real life!)

Personally I think this song is about a boy who had a pretty crappy dad, not necessarily physically abusive, but maybe emotionally abusive or neglectful. And when he says that his girlfriend was okay but she was high school and he was real life he meant that he liked this girl but her problems and her views were that of a teenager with not much going on outside of basic teen related drama and he felt that his problems set him on a different emotional plane where he felt less like a child and more like someone who had to grow up too fast. I think when he says that he was more like his wife and sings about doing the push-ups and putting on the make-up he is referring to the ridiculous lengths that children of neglectful parents will go to in order to feel like they have pleased their parent or done right by them due to a lack of recognition or positive attention growing up. I think that he explains this when he sings about having a dream that he was beating his dad, but it became more about killing him than of self defense, because when you grow older after so many years of pining for the attention of an emotionally distant parent you grow to resent them to a certain degree and harboring that anger and the inability to appropriately express it can manifest itself subconsciously towards a desire for control or assertion that can be expressed through extreme violence and not necessity of self protection, which may have been appropriate in the past either metaphorically (for cases of emotional abuse) or literally (for cases of physical abuse)

Ive heard him say in concert that this song is about his dad. Then I saw an interview where he said this song is about tom and matts dad....

I want to know what maybe just one of their songs is about. I feel like they are all mash-ups or descriptions of dReams.
"you were high school"?
Catchy as hell but no clue. Super hooky.
it doesn't seem very vague or ambiguous to me..? maybe if i clarify this part for you, you'll see what i mean.

by saying "..you were high school, and i was just more like real life. and you were okay as a girlfriend, but i was just more like real life.." he means that she was immature and like a teenage girl, or viewed+/treated their relationship+/him the way a teenage/high school girl would. that's why he says "you were okay as a girlfriend" because girlfriends are set to lower standards than wives: you don't have to love them, they don't...

I always got a really dark sense from this one, I thought it was about how he (or the narrator, character, whatever) was sexually abused by his father, because he reminded him of the mother/wife who isn't there for some reason. And this is all him escaping to his girlfriend's house but knowing it doesn't matter because he has to go back in the morning.

It really sounds like he [the character] was sexually abused by his father and that's mostly because it's such a hurtful, profound topic that he didn't really say it, it's just subtle in the song. He also mentions his great great great great grandfather raping a native american woman, so... Yeah, it totally makes sense to me. The character hopes to crash his car because it's better than going home and he keeps saying he was "just more like his wife" and, well, the song title also says it all. Oh, and the sounds before he starts singing are really, really full of negativity. Anyway.
@raissaroars i dont think sexual abuse, more like just physical.

I feel like the chorus is sung from the perspective of a girl talking to her boyfriends last girlfriend. She is describing why he is with her now.

is it just me or do the lyrics of this song sound super gay
im a gay guy so this is not a homophobic question it just seems like its about a guy wanting his straight friends boyfriend
@rivergooch That actually makes a lot of sense, now that I think about it. Interesting.

@rivergooch ummm, absolutely not what this is about, it's clearly a physically abusive relationshop between him and his dad, and i would like to say that gay people can be homophobic.

I think this bit is his dads new girlfriend talking to his mum.
Cause you were high school And I was just more like real life
His mum was a highschool fling type thing, where they then had a kid. Then things start to go downhill and his mum is no longer good for his dad because she doesnt make enough of an effort for him.
I'll do the pushups I'll wear the makeup I'll do whatever he wants all night His dad meets a new woman who 'wears the make up' and is more of a serious relationship
Hes annoyed with his dad for doing this to his mum and his family, and looks for comfort with a girl. 'you look good tonight girlfriend, Can I sleep in your bed?'
'And I believe that yeah, dad, maybe no one is perfect But it seems that you were pushing your luck'
- He thinks his dad was being harsh to his mum
This might all have been a big argument and the series of events that happened that night, perhaps the argument he heard between his dads new girlfriend, his dad and his mum. He then goes for an angry drive and ends up at a girls house.
