Personally I think this song is about a boy who had a pretty crappy dad, not necessarily physically abusive, but maybe emotionally abusive or neglectful. And when he says that his girlfriend was okay but she was high school and he was real life he meant that he liked this girl but her problems and her views were that of a teenager with not much going on outside of basic teen related drama and he felt that his problems set him on a different emotional plane where he felt less like a child and more like someone who had to grow up too fast. I think when he says that he was more like his wife and sings about doing the push-ups and putting on the make-up he is referring to the ridiculous lengths that children of neglectful parents will go to in order to feel like they have pleased their parent or done right by them due to a lack of recognition or positive attention growing up. I think that he explains this when he sings about having a dream that he was beating his dad, but it became more about killing him than of self defense, because when you grow older after so many years of pining for the attention of an emotionally distant parent you grow to resent them to a certain degree and harboring that anger and the inability to appropriately express it can manifest itself subconsciously towards a desire for control or assertion that can be expressed through extreme violence and not necessity of self protection, which may have been appropriate in the past either metaphorically (for cases of emotional abuse) or literally (for cases of physical abuse)
