The Guns Called Me Back Again Lyrics
Shadows lengthening.
Ninety five steps I'm taking.
With every step I'm longing
For the luck to keep on living.
The drum calls me back again
To my senses,
Filled with shame.
O that this night
Would never end,
And on no-man's-land
The sun would not rise again.
There was laughing, and I could not laugh.
There was singing, and I could not sing.
The big guns called me back again.
The big guns called me back again.
The big guns called me back again.
I hear voices singing.
I hear the guns beginning.
Far off and far away
I hear the guns again.
Ninety five steps I'm taking.
With every step I'm longing
For the luck to keep on living.
To my senses,
Filled with shame.
Would never end,
And on no-man's-land
The sun would not rise again.
There was singing, and I could not sing.
The big guns called me back again.
The big guns called me back again.
The big guns called me back again.
I hear the guns beginning.
Far off and far away
I hear the guns again.

I have a vision when I listen this song: a soldier that tried to reach the enemy's territory and was hidden there in the night, listening his enemies laughing and singing and he should just stay quiet. He doesn't want the night to ends, so they will never find him. "To my senses, filled with shame." since he was ashamed of leaving his army and was alone there. And in the morning he hears his enemy going to the battle again and he hears the guns and the singing.
I think this song is about someone dealing with PTSD, and PJ Harvey decided to use the imagery of war to illustrate.
