C'est La Vie Lyrics

Stepped off a chair so he could learn to let loose
Learn to let loose before the pendulum wore off
In his final sound a gurgle and a cough
In his final words the pendulum wore off
Stepped off a building to find some concrete evidence
Concrete evidence that he'd ever make an impact
Fiction splattered into...
Fiction splattered into fact

And his fiction splattered into another sidewalk painting on display
Stepped off a bridge so he could make a splash
To make a splash he had to flounder like a fish out of water
Another lamb that chose the slaughter
Stepped off a chair so he could learn to let loose
Learn to let loose before the pendulum wore off
And his final sound...

Stepped off the platform and he briefly made,
Yeah, he briefly made the news
It made the news and he made the trains run fifteen minutes late
Oh, what a price to pay... the trains were fifteen minutes late
Oh, what a price to pay... to be the author of your fate
The trains were fifteen minutes late (to be the author of your fate)
The trains were fifteen minutes late (to be the author of your fate)

C'est la vie!
A drooling old bitch and a house full of lies
C'est la vie!
The little things that kill you make you glad to be alive
C'est la vie!
Disease in your genes and ocean levels on the rise
C'est la vie!
Sing a song of living, before everybody dies!

I agree with Djentleman21. It's that epic section with "the trains were 15 minutes late" that adds the feeling that the trains being late is more important than the person committing suicide. What Protest are saying is this is wrong, making "C'est la Vie" or "That's the life" (or something similar) a sarcastic statement.

"Another lamb that chose the slaughter"

For me this is the most powerful line. People prefer death or "the slaughter" than suffer the pain of life.

Amazing song that requires a fair few listens because it comes at you at such a fast pace!

Song Meaning

Better translation to C'est La Vie: This is life. 'That's life' also works.

or "such is life"

I think its mainly about how minuscule suicide has an effect on the world or perhaps how common its becoming.

"Stepped off the platform and he briefly made, Yeah, he briefly made the news It made the news and he made the trains run fifteen minutes late"

This section I think really makes that clear.

In a nutshellI, I think they're just saying how dumb suicide is. cant wait for the album!

Woo, first comment! This is a great start to what I'm hoping will be another spectacular album. Thumbs up Protest.

I agree! the track sounds definitely bigger and more mature than the last two records...this album could be the best one!

My Opinion

Djentleman21 seems to have this down All the scenarios seem to say something different about suicide, or the reasons for it The chair is to just let go, get away The building is out of human curiosity about death, heaven, etc (concrete evidence, great pun) The bridge is to get noticed (ie make a splash) It mentions a lamb choosing the slaughter, so it's innocent people (commonly symbolized by a lamb) choosing to die As was said, the platform is just the frequency and irrelevancy of suicide, possibly playing off of the "making a splash" line And "c'est la vie" is a French expression meaning "That's life", or more simply put, "Shit happens" Its commenting on our perception of our own mortality and that of others

To agree with Bfgoodwin, the people committing suicide feel like they are martyring themselves, like it's the only "concrete" way for them to make an "impact"

What do you think that whole last section means? It looks almost like a lament for the dead to me, "the little things that kill you make you glad to be alive." maybe suggesting that there's something to be learned from tragedies like this, about human compassion. Or perhaps it simply means, be glad you have what you've got. Any thoughts?

I kinda took it in a tangible sense. Things like drugs or cigarettes allow someone to "enjoy" life to the fullest, but it still kills you slowly. But definitely, I like your idea on humans appreciating things after tragedy.

I'd say that this line means that little things can make you totally sad like a bad mark in school or a not won football game which was important for you. But you must not let these thing make you down because there are people who have way way bigger problems like hunger and poverty-look at africa and the US as opposites. And if you see how poor people for example in africa are you're glad that you have sth. to eat and a flat and very less problems.

I agree with what Snabes said. The song is pretty much telling you to enjoy your life while you have it, dont kill yourself cause it wont solve any problems. The message that popped into my head while reading everyones comments on here is: We are all in this shithole world together, we can only help each other to make it worth our while

Something about "The trains were 15 minutes late" makes me 99.99% positive this is about the fascist leader of Italy during WWII: Benito Mussolini. His most famous action was making the trains run on time, and when he died he was hung by his legs, like a Pendulum. Just a thought.

first, if you dont understand me, sry, english is not my mother tongue.

I think this is abot fragile and lonely people who never get attention. And to get attention they kill or hurt themselfs (made the news...). My example is Tom. Tom is alone now since 30 yrs and has no friend and his last will is to change the world. So he throws himself infront of a train. Then the conuctor has to call the cops and carry the body out of the way and this costs 15 min. so the trains are 15 minutes late. And in the news in...

Arif [Mirabdolbaghi, bass] wrote this song, so this will be merely my interpretation of the lyrics. It’s about the insignificance of suicide and the fleeting few moments where anyone might give a fuck. Inside that, it explores appreciating the little things in life that make it worth living. - Rody walker courtesy of Alt Press
