What do you think that whole last section means? It looks almost like a lament for the dead to me, "the little things that kill you make you glad to be alive." maybe suggesting that there's something to be learned from tragedies like this, about human compassion. Or perhaps it simply means, be glad you have what you've got. Any thoughts?

I kinda took it in a tangible sense. Things like drugs or cigarettes allow someone to "enjoy" life to the fullest, but it still kills you slowly. But definitely, I like your idea on humans appreciating things after tragedy.

I'd say that this line means that little things can make you totally sad like a bad mark in school or a not won football game which was important for you. But you must not let these thing make you down because there are people who have way way bigger problems like hunger and poverty-look at africa and the US as opposites. And if you see how poor people for example in africa are you're glad that you have sth. to eat and a flat and very less problems.

I agree with what Snabes said. The song is pretty much telling you to enjoy your life while you have it, dont kill yourself cause it wont solve any problems. The message that popped into my head while reading everyones comments on here is: We are all in this shithole world together, we can only help each other to make it worth our while
