The Glorious Land Lyrics
How is our glorious country ploughed?
Not by iron plows
How is our glorious country ploughed?
Not by iron plows
Our lands is ploughed by tanks and feet,
Feet
Marching
Our lands is ploughed by tanks and feet,
Feet
Marching
Oh, America
Oh, England
Oh, America
Oh, England
How is our glorious country sown?
Not with wheat and corn.
How is our glorious country sown?
Not with wheat and corn.
How is our glorious land bestowed?
How is our glorious land bestowed?
Oh, America
Oh, England
Oh, America
Oh, England
Oh, America
Oh, England
Oh, America
Oh, England
What is the glorious fruit of our land?
Its fruit is deformed children.
What is the glorious fruit of our land?
Its fruit is orphaned children.
What is the glorious fruit of our land?
Its fruit is deformed children.
What is the glorious fruit of our land?
Its fruit is deformed children.
Not by iron plows
How is our glorious country ploughed?
Not by iron plows
Our lands is ploughed by tanks and feet,
Feet
Marching
Our lands is ploughed by tanks and feet,
Feet
Marching
Oh, England
Oh, America
Oh, England

One of my very favorite PJ Harvey songs ever, on a truly brilliant album.
Oh shi- that's what the last verse says!?
This album is nuts. Such beautiful tragedy.
I think this is about the bombing of Japan at the close of WW2 I believe. It reminds me of Grave of the Fireflies, a film about two children struggling to survive in wartime Japan.
That or just the perspective of the locals in a country being invaded by neo-colonial powers, like America and England. American interventionism often exploits those being invaded, stripping them of their culture, and ability to be a contender in the world economy. They are forced to exploit their own children to survive.
