Song for the Angels Lyrics
The echo to your yell
The ripple to your dive
The currents under your wave
Electricity
Flows through me
I send it out to you
We were charged
With the founding poles
Of a million years
A million years
Before us
Have trembled in their fears
Never saw you never heard you
But i knew that you where there
Everywhere
I could feel you all around me
I know that i am just a grain of sand
Meeting water at the land
We could make our castles here
And sweep them all away
I know that i am just a drop of water
Frozen into ice on the stormy earth
Who gave us birth
Over and over in cycles
Lovely cycles
Never saw you never heard you
But i knew that you were there
Everywhere
I could feel you all around me
Never saw you never heard you
But i knew that you were there
Everywhere
I could feel you all around me
The ripple to your dive
The currents under your wave
Flows through me
I send it out to you
We were charged
With the founding poles
Of a million years
A million years
Before us
Have trembled in their fears
But i knew that you where there
Everywhere
I could feel you all around me
Meeting water at the land
We could make our castles here
And sweep them all away
Frozen into ice on the stormy earth
Who gave us birth
Over and over in cycles
Lovely cycles
But i knew that you were there
Everywhere
I could feel you all around me
But i knew that you were there
Everywhere
I could feel you all around me

Wow. I'm not really sure what this means, but my gut tells me that it is about that subtle connection you feel with the "supernatural" sometimes. Beautiful song.
definate "supernatural" elements. a really breathtaking song - when he breaks off into the series of ooooo..'s near the ending, i seem to just drift away to the delicate, almost magnetic pull of his voice
A really beautiful song that I love to listen to when I'm falling asleep, it may even help peaceful dreams. I wonder if music can do that?
For me I fell two meanings - both with the power, beauty and awe of life defining relationships.
A more literal one that is the relationship between a person and 'god' or as I'm not religious 'the universe.
And a second interpretation is about the relationship with two people, who have a strong connection although one is absent, perhaps has always been absent, such as a past generation family member, or even a son who lost his mother in childbirth.
or maybe... 'charged with founding the poles' 'just a grain of sand, just a drop of water' The grandiose miracle of individual 'life' contrasted by all of life for all time.
I like the verse, "I know that I am just a grain of sand, Meeting water at the land, We could build our castles here, and sweep them all away." It seems to be about the physical nature of energy and matter contrasted between the things we humans find on earth like playing on the beach and building sandcastles. We are, in the smaller picture just humans with one life to live, but in the grander picture we are made up of the same things physically as sand and water are. So we are on the beach building the castle, philosophically we are just one grain of sand in a large dessert, and physically we are the sand we build the sandcastle out of, and the water that washes it away.
I always thought it was: "We were charged with the pounding pulse of a million years and millions before us have trembled in their fears"
Could be wrong though. Anyway, as others have said, I get that this is a song about spirituality and our connection with nature. I don't think the writer is so much relegious as they are spiritual and I think the use of the word angels in the title is more figurative than anything else. That seems obvious to me from the context of the song as a whole.
I also agree that this can be a song about love for one person as much as a song about being in love with the universe, and how those things overlap or interweave. My partner played this song to me the first time I ever heard it, even though I had introduced her to the band, and I the chorus always reminds me of her.

To me this song is also largely about accepting and coming to peace with our mortality.
