I don't think it was a romantic relationship, because then it's just really egotistical. Instead I think it's parent - child. Probably a song that many older punks can relate to. Their lives have led them away from their kids and for their kids to move on, they have to forget about him.
I think it is like the person tells the ones he loves to turn their back on him because he is harming them, maybe because of a depression. His loved ones are better off without the negative impact he has on them.
