Pale Lyrics

I'm looking at a face, a pointed chin
Towards the sky, an arrogance
It easily betrays the closest friend
No moment lost, no consequence

A circle starts again (away from you)
Deception pulls us in (away from you)
Away from you, away from you

An imitation, a fabrication
A pretty fake, a counterfeit
An empty carcass behind the artist
Is there a trace of innocence?

So how do you portray a sentiment?
A ruse is brought,
The truth is bent
And much to our dismay, they're ignorant
The more that we make up, the more it fits

A circle starts again (away from you)
Deception pulls us in (away from you)
Away from you, away from you

An imitation, a fabrication
A pretty fake, a counterfeit
An empty carcass behind the artist
Is there a trace of innocence?

This doesn't feel right
Feels like everything's further away
Dead as the nightlife
Hindsight, watching another mistake
We never feel right, long nights
Following into the day
Dead as the streetlights, pure white
Washing the color away

An imitation, a fabrication
A pretty fake, a counterfeit
An empty carcass behind the artist
Is there a trace of innocence?

This song sounds like someone is a manipulater mastermind. Someone clearly causes a lot of trouble and refuses to take responsibility... or something of that nature.

My Interpretation

"A ruse is bought, the truth is bent" is saying someone twisting around others belief. Saying something that bending the the truth to fit whet they belief. Disliking what other people think. There is one truth, but there meany beliefs. The song is basically about religion itself. What people believe in.

I think its a criticism of religion too, but could easily fit atheism as well.

My brother is a vocal anti-Christian critic thinking he's saving them the grief of disappointment, $$$, and ignorance he had when he was in the priesthood. His face is definitely towards the sky with arrogance betraying his closest friend (Jesus) with no moment lost, no consequence (unless Jesus is true). His deception (imitation/fabrication/counterfeit/ruse/ignorance/mistake/washing the color away) could be his atheism (if he's wrong).

I am a visual artist who creates artworks with a clear intent in mind, but viewers often bring in their own ideas to my artworks with new meanings based on their own lives. I think the Birthday Massacre would appreciate my reinterpretation as I do with my own artworks. Try this one out:

I think this song is about religion. Many Christians who look down on atheists, ("I'm looking at a face, a pointed chin towards the sky, an arrogance"), in my experience, are not very virtuous people themselves at all - racist, homophobic, intolerant ("It easily betrays the closest friend, no moment lost, no consequence"). Even if you are religious yourself and are unlike these people, they may paint a bad image of religion to you and you draw further away from it ("The circle starts again, away from you"). But people will always use scare tactics to force you into it ("Deception pulls us in").

This song IMO also references the Bible and the belief that Jesus' words were twisted ("An imitation, a fabrication, a pretty fake, a counterfeit"). It isn't to be taken literally, "God didn't write the Bible" ("An empty carcass behind the artist, is there a trace of innocence?").

Something I've noticed about people who have criticized me themselves try to ignore parts of their belief system that do not necessarily fit their agenda ("A ruse is brought, the truth is bent. And much to our dismay, they're ignorant. The more that we make up, the more it fits").

In my opinion ...

I don't think this song is necessarily against religion; what I feel is that it is against people who say they're religious but don't follow what they say. They also make others who DO follow what they profess look bad.

I highly agree with Stude4art's comment and some of hundredskies' comment.

This doesn't feel right Feels like everything's further away Dead as the nightlife (?) Hindsight, watching another mistake We never feel right, warm night (?) Following into the day Dead as the street light, pure white Washing the color away

Immitation, a fabrication A pretty fake, but counterfeit An empty carcass behind the artist Is there a trait of innocence?

i did my best, these lyrics are tricky as hell.

imo it's "a trace of innocence". A "trait of innocence" sounds like grammar gone wrong, a bit.
