I've been listening to this song constantly, it's reminding me of someone and breaking my heart with every listen. Definitely about a toxic relationship in which she needs a guy who doesn't care about her in the least except when it's convenient for him.

It's about a relationship where one person truly loves the other, but the other loves their substances. In this case alcohol. "You're drunk, you need it. Real love, I'll give it."

I agree with herspotlessmind, except I think in addition to the alcohol, it's also an abusive relationship. Because the person is always drunk, he leaves violently and she's begging him to stay clean so he won't come back with anger or violence.

Fortunately many people will not interpret the true depth and despair of this song. However living through active alcoholism & loving someone who is 100% dependent on alcohol to survive, (cuz yes that happens), & it’s not pretty. Once to that point the alcoholic can not stop drinking without medical detox because withdrawal is fatal. These lyrics touch on that & then move into the insidious addiction of the disease of alcoholism & the chaos it brings, and sadly the choice to continue drinking because the obsession is greater than the will to live. Shit is real and fucking sad af. I think it’s about loving an alcoholic and being one and giving in because of the continuous spiral.
