Suffocation Lyrics

We ignore refused consent
Animals do not repent
Courtesy to intervene
Weathered down my selfish needs

I suffocate
And promise me you won't resuscitate
And when I change my mind it's far too late
I'm wasting my days as I've wasted my nights and I've wasted my youth
You're waiting for something you've waited in vain because there's nothing for you

Suffocation

Humility yet to be seen
Models made of plasticine
Morality disgrace us now
Entertain and take a bow

I suffocate
And promise me you won't resuscitate
And when I change my mind it's far too late
I'm wasting my days as I've wasted my nights and I've wasted my youth
You're waiting for something you've waited in vain because there's nothing for you

'we ignore refused consent'

ignoring refused consent = rape.

@hinrodath so right, and it makes more sense 'cause Alice said that she wrote hide lyrics about the abuse form Ethan

It sounds like it's being said by someone who can only see the impulsive and destructive nature in human beings. To this person, morality and intelligence is a guise we fool ourselves with because we're afraid of what only exists in our minds, not in our nature. If I thought everyone in the world was my enemy, I''d feel suffocated as well.

My Interpretation

I'll add that it might make these thoughts reflect back on the writer and they may feel like no longer existing because they, in turn, are also impulsive and destructive. Anyway, Alice singing this song gives me the warm and fuzzies.

In the first verse she's clearly talking about rape.

" Courtesy to intervene Weathered down my selfish needs "

This reminds me the Lars Von Trier's film Dogville, in which the main character is forced to have sex with all the men of the village in exchange for 'protection'.

It's like she's realizing how cruel we (human beings) can be with each other, and it generated an extreme feeling of oppression. That's why she suffocates, incorporating a character who's gonna be more accepted than her true self.

" And promise me YOU won't resuscitate "

The "YOU" in this verse refers to her true self, enhancing the idea that she has created a character to protect herself from evilness. And if she changes her mind (give up on being someone who she isn't) it will be too late because she's already lost her youth being someone who she isn't to live a 'secure life'.

In the second verse she speaks about arrogance (humility yet to be seen), and maybe authoritarianism (models made of plasticine), the government 'shapes' the people the way they want to satisfy their own needs. And also, the failure of morality, which instead of protect us, disgrace us with all its hypocrites speeches of what society should be.

"Entertain and take a bow" enhances even more the idea that she's just one more character living in the movie of real life. It also refers to other song of them, Empathy (You must work in symmetry/You must earn their empathy). Show the crowd what they expect to see and be acclaimed.

This song is about being in an dying relationship, wanting the relationship to to end. "I've wasted my days, and wasted my nights" Alice feels trapped, suffocated, there's nothing left in it for her. Maybe it's how she felt in cc as she left the group, she also said her creativity was trapped in cc, which in an art level not having that flow you need can feel like suffocation,

the lyrics kinda feel like the story is about someone who is young and doesn't know any better, whoever is waiting for this other person to fall in love with them but it never happens, you waste your days, and your nights thinking about that person, and you waste your youth waiting for them. its too late to change your mind because your teenage years are gone, wasted in vein, you get all kinds of crazy emotions and ideas trying to justify your emotions that where wasted, and ended being worthless or trying to come up with excuses to keep waiting, to keep your emotions and time from being wasted in vein. the first line "we ignore refused consent" lets say i asked a girl to love me, she said she doesnt love me, but is still love her anyways.love is a 2 way thing, and for you to believe its love and not just obsession you'd have to believe they some how feel the same. the next lines i think are when you want sex you want intimacy and feelings between you 2 but they dont and it weathers down you're "selfish needs" (you blame yourself for wanting more) your love suffocates on and off and you just want it to end. idk thats my take on it

This song is like a suicidal hymn, it comes from the heart of a young woman who, tired of dealing with the cruel world around her, asks to be left to die once and for all. It is known that suicides ask for help because deep down they don't want to realize their idealizations, this song is like their cry for help. The act of suffocating is one of the most agonizing ways of death that exist, because it gives you enough time to understand that you die and motivates you to fight against it, success is not very sure. But suffocating is not something that only surrounds death; Stress, anxiety, depression and personal crises also feel like a stifle you try to get out of but you don't always succeed. Expressing that she suffocates can be a way of saying that he cannot stand it anymore, that he will give up and that no one or nothing should interfere with her decisions. Many times those of us who have had suicidal thoughts believe that those who want to save us do so to rid themselves of guilt, not really because they want to save our lives. Perhaps this is why the idea of suicide is so selfish ...
