Mansion Song Lyrics

I fancy the hip rock 'n' roll scenester
I wanna be fucked and then rolled over
'Cause I'm an independent woman of the 21st century
No time for knits, I want sex and debauchery
I read Glamour and the Guardian
I like flowers and I'm hardy and I take cocaine
I don't give a fuck about her, I want your name
I can get fucked like the best of men
Like the best of men, like the worst of pain
Inflicted on another young girl again
Impressed by another guitar hero
He's a top score and you're a zero
You're out of your league
There ain't no rubber on the tracks, it's gravel
You fall hard, cut quick and it's an STD, a cut knee
You're a side of stage grasp, a laugh
An after show party in a bath
Fucked and expected to be fucked
A gasp from an uninformed intruder
The crowd go wild and things get ruder
They're already out of hand
And there's no one here to take your hand
It's a cold shower and a scramble
For a dirty pair of knickers
Don't get yours mixed up with hers
Now get out of bed, get out of bed
Get out, get out, get, get out of bed
Get up, get down and get undressed
'Cause that's what you do best
Strip, strip, strip and shag
Fuck, get fucked and drag
And be impressed by the better sex
Take a piece of raw vegetable
And hold it to your breast and say
That you stood for nothing
You were just a hole that lacked passion
Another undignified product of society
That girl should have been a mansion

I don't have to be your baby
I don't have to be your baby
I don't have to be your baby
I don't have to be your baby

We can make love
We can make love
We can make love
We can make love

You can't "get some"
You can't "get some"
You can't "get some"
This is not love

I am a mansion, I am a mansion
I won't take none of your shit
I am a mansion, I am a mansion
I won't take none of your shit
I am a mansion, I am a mansion
I won't take none of your shit
I am a mansion, I am a mansion
I won't take none of your shit

You can try and have your way
But I have far too much to say
So you'll be asleep before
I'm taking off my shirt
You can try and have your way
But I have far too much to say
So you'll be asleep before
I'm taking off my shirt

And I'll be a lady
And I'll be a lady
And I will never let you

I was really surprised and speechless when I heard this song but well done Kate for writing a song against women being used and exploited. I think she said she wrote this song about some groupies she saw at a festival. The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwMFU2SNR0A

Minor correction.

"He's a top score and you're a zero"

Should be:

"He's the top scorer and you're the zero"

Lyric Correction

In the liner notes, it says "He's a top score and you're a zero."

I get the overall meaning of the song, but what does she mean by "I am a mansion"? How does a mansion compare to a person?

Not cheap.

She uses it as a metaphor for a girl not easily putting out.

Ohhhh! Thank you eightyseven. Haha I get it now.

The first time i heard this song i fell in love with how strong it is. At first I thought it was her saying she was an 'independent woman of the 21st century', but I think it's her mocking people who do think like that, up until 'like the worst of pain', then it's telling the real story, pretty self-explanatory, really frank and blunt. I think hole means.. hole.. like she (whoever it is she is singing about) was just having sex for the sake of sex, with no passion. i dont know about the raw vegetable bit.. any suggestions? And the unspoken/sung bit is her own thoughts, like she wouldnt sleep with someone for no reason.

aaaah i love this song so much, especially the spoken bit at the start. and how you can just hear her say 'ok' at the very beginning.

Yeah I love this song, too.

Every time I listen to it, though, I find myself going "what the f*** does she mean about 'take a piece of raw vegetable and hold it to your breast'?!"

SO any ideas? That is the one part that stumps me every time. Is it some English slang that I don't know about here in the America's, or just a metaphor I'm missing lol. Sometimes I think of a limp piece of celery that she's clinging to, all sad that it's limp hehe... I don't know why, though, that makes no sense. I just thought I'd throw in what I always picture hehe. :)

Thanks!

It's a reference to the pivotal scene in Gone With the Wind, where Scarlett rises from the fields and vows "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again!"

"<i>'You know the bit where it goes, “Take a piece of raw vegetable and hold it to your breast”?’ Yes, I say, suitably baffled. She continues, 'You know in Gone with the Wind at the end where she kills that guy and she goes off and says that speech, “I’ll never be hungry again,” [and holds up] a turnip? It was like a really righteous moment. She was,...

'No time for knits, I want sex and debauchery'

isn't it 'no time for nits, I want sex and abortuary'

might be wrong but oh well :)

I feel like the part about the "take a piece of raw vegetable and hold it to your breast and say that you stood for nothing" refers to the whole domestic housewife thing and knowing that your place should be in the kitchen and that whole notion that women will not amount to anything else.

& maybe that whole "that girl should have been a mansion" thing is about how women are just treated like pieces of property and that they're expected to be nice and fancy and pretty on the outside, but are usually pretty empty on the inside because they have nothing to fill themselves with (ie. passion).
