Belong Lyrics
Wake up lonely with you by my side
One more night it doesn't feel
There are movies playing in your eyes
You dream of our fortunes
But you're wrong
I don't belong to you
The moon is the only friend I have outside
One more drink and I'll be healed
I told you the words and then knew it was a lie
I wish I could offer an appeal
You're wrong
I don't belong
You're wrong
I don't belong to you
What I'd give for that first night when you were mine
Tried with all that I have to keep you alive
I wasn't taught this way
With a thousand things to say
I was born with a broken heart
What I'd give for that first night when you were mine
Thought you were mine
So I'll put this cigarette to bed
Pull some sheets from off your side
I put my arm around you safe in the night
Still dreaming of fortune
But you're wrong
I don't belong
You're wrong
I don't belong
I don't belong
One more night it doesn't feel
There are movies playing in your eyes
You dream of our fortunes
I don't belong to you
One more drink and I'll be healed
I told you the words and then knew it was a lie
I wish I could offer an appeal
I don't belong
You're wrong
I don't belong to you
Tried with all that I have to keep you alive
With a thousand things to say
I was born with a broken heart
What I'd give for that first night when you were mine
Thought you were mine
Pull some sheets from off your side
I put my arm around you safe in the night
Still dreaming of fortune
But you're wrong
I don't belong
You're wrong
I don't belong
I don't belong

He's with someone who he's not into anymore ("Wake up lonely with you by my side"). He's lost the feeling ("One more night it doesn't feel"), but he cannot tell her. She's oblivious to the fact that he's not into her anymore ("There are movies playing in your eyes") and, worse, he tells her things he knows are not true ("I told you the words and then knew it was a lie"). He tries, however, to get back to where they started ("Tried with all that I have to keep you alive"), even fantasizes about it ("What I'd give for that first night when you were mine").
The line that confuses me a little is: "I wasn't taught this way. With a thousand things to say."
I think he's saying that his upbringing was to be less emotional, which explains why he seems resigned to his lonely fate with his mate. And the cigarette he's putting to bed is the "bad habit" of daydreaming about a different life ("So I'll put this cigarette to bed"). He's going back to simply pretending ("I put my arm around you safe in the night. Still dreaming of fortune. But you're wrong").
Sad and yet, we've all been there.
This song took me right back to a ridiculous situation I was put in; long story very short... met someone I thought was special, who said all the right things and had me thinking it was something it wasn't... mainly because there was a girlfriend I wasn't aware of. I imagine these words were what he wanted to say to me as he was lying next to me all those nights, knowing he wasn't taught this way, telling me all the words he knew were a lie. I was wrong, he didn't belong to me.
The moon is the only friend I have outside (such a liar couldnt' have real friends) One more drink and I'll be healed (tried to drink the guilt away) I told you the words and then knew it was a lie (every single word) I wish I could offer an appeal (but he knew there wasn't any)
You're wrong (even though I made you believe) I don't belong You're wrong I don't belong to you
What I'd give for that first night when you were mine Tried with all that I have to keep you alive (tried to keep the fantasy alive but the end was inevitable)
I wasn't taught this way (what would your mother say) With a thousand things to say (and yet never the truth) I was born with a broken heart (broken in a different way than we usually think; defective is more like it)
This song breaks my heart.

What a hauntingly beautiful song.
Wake up lonely with you by my side One more night it doesn't feel There are movies playing in your eyes You dream of our fortunes But you're wrong I don't belong to you"
I feel like this first verse is pretty self explanatory. 'Wake up lonely with you by my side' signifies he feels empty within the relationship, perhaps revealing that he's lost and/or is losing his feelings towards her. 'You deam of our fortunes' - meanwhile, she's still completely in love with him, expecting that they'll be together forever. She sees the life they could have, all the 'fortunes' they could gain in the future; what their life will be like. Then he turns around and says she's wrong to think these things, because he knows they won't have that future. He 'doesn't belong' to her because he simply doesn't feel the same way about her anymore.
"The moon is the only friend I have outside One more drink and I'll be healed I told you the words and then knew it was a lie I wish I could offer an appeal"
'The moon is the only friend I have outside' is possibly another reference to loneliness. He's trying to drink away his sorrows. The words he's saying (supposedly lies) could be anything really, though you'd assume an 'I love you.' However, it could be anything he says to her that gives her hope for their future or cements his 'feelings' for her.
"What I'd give for that first night when you were mine Tried with all that I have to keep you alive I wasn't taught this way With a thousand things to say I was born with a broken heart What I'd give for that first night when you were mine Thought you were mine"
This is the game changer. This verse suggests that he's still trying to hold onto their relationship. Maybe, just as much as he isn't ready to admit that they're drifting apart to her, he isn't ready to admit it to himself either. He wants that spark back from when they first met. When he says he 'tried so hard to keep her alive' I believe he's referring moreso to the relationship and his feelings for her. Though he knows it's ending, it's clear he isn't quite ready to give up on the relationship yet either.
"So I'll put this cigarette to bed Pull some sheets from off your side I put my arm around you safe in the night Still dreaming of fortune But you're wrong I don't belong"
Self explanatory again. This is him playing pretend, falling back into the patterns of their relationship despite all he's just expressed, and yet again acknowledging that they aren't meant to be together and will not last.
Weak ass nigga he coulda just broke that girl heart by telling her right into her face its over...rather than singing trash
