20 Feet Tall Lyrics

My love what did I do to make you fall so far from me
And now, I can't recall the cause of the fall, selective memory
Then you, you built a wall
A 20 foot wall
So I couldn't see

If I get off my knees I might recall I'm 20 feet tall.
Ooh, eh
I'm 20 feet tall
Ooh, eh
I'm 20 feet tall

My love what did I do to make you fall so far from me
And how, I can't recall cause of the fall selected memory
Then you, you built a wall
A 20 foot wall
So I couldn't see

If I get off my knees I might recall I'm 20 feet tall.
Ooh, eh
I'm 20 feet tall
Ooh, eh
I'm 20 feet tall

Ah, hey
I'm 20 feet tall
Ah
I'm 20 feet tall

I believe this song is not about a loved one being "upset" with her. This song is about falling from the grace of God, God is love. She doesn't remember what made us "fall" from grace, the ego has put up a "wall" where she can't see. Religion has made us feel we must kneel down and pray to something in the "sky" to "redeem" ourselves in a way, however if she gets off her knees she will see that she's "taller" than she thought, closer to God than she thought.

on point...

The song is about the relationship with her higher self and physical self. Her soul and her human self. The fall is coming to earth to be a human and now she can't remember her soul and how magnificent and powerful it is. And how the human mind builds walls and makes you forget who you truly are. Religion, through praying (praying on your knees to someone outside of yourself) takes your power away from self. If you get off your knees praying to someone outside of self you might recall your own power. YOU'RE 20 FT TALL!!!!

Fell out with a loved one, tried to block it out so much so that she couldn't even remember the reason for the fall out. The loved one created a wall hoping that Erykah wouldn't be able to 'see', see possibly meaning see their pain ? The last part is kind of vague to me. If she stands up properly, she is 20 feet tall, and since the wall is 20 feet she should be able to just peer over the top. I don't know, I'm quite confused as to the last part.

i also agree with kayegeey and i believe it also has to do with the new georgia guidestone 'commandments'... i put 2 and 2 together and it seems like people are worshipping a new 'God' [world religion]....i did my math and my research and found that those 'guidestones' are about 20 FEET TALL.... trust me if i know about this Ms Badu been knew.

Hmm... while im not knocking ur interpretations (just like the Bible, song lyrics can mean multiple right things to multiple different ppl), I see it as simply the story of an individual who was in love, went through a dirty breakup, one of those where u just argue so much u forget the root of the problem. Then he/she realizes after all the arguments & "walls" of isolation that had been built, that the walls could be "torn down" simply by standing up. Or, in other words, they could be ameliorated through the love they still have for one another... i try to do pretty liberal interpretations of things...

loving and caring for this man, he still turns his back on you, he puts up a wall, abandons/ignores you. she's hurt, can't understand why he is doing this. because of the fall ("the fall of MAN") she (we ALL) have problems recalling what we truely ARE. because of the fall she/we can't recall that we are 20 feet tall...WE ARE GREATER THAN WHAT WE BELIEVE WE ARE. she knows if she "gets off her knees" she/we will realize that this is all an illusion anyway.

@Kayegeey

But if her song is about God, why would there be the sound of squeaking bed springs in the background?

that's a very obscure conclusion to jump to regarding a subtle, mostly likely more insignificant than not sounds in the vast soundscape that makes up the rest of the song. and creation is viewed as a gift from god in damn near every religion i know about. do you not value the birth of a child and the ability to do so? and does your bed not squeak when you reproduce/make love (which i'm assuming you do, have done, or will do at some point) as to maintain your holiness? either way i doubt it was meant to be a bed spring,...
