I think that when he's referring to a little girl its about her naivety. I think hes talking about a girl who thinks that this love that she has will solve everything and be easy (theres no shortcut to a dream). But shes young and naive and can't actually see who he is (you've got me wrong). I think he's alluding to that first love that everyone has when you don't completely understand what it means and thats something that will come in time with experience (through the give and take you had to learn how to cross the coals and not get burned).

I feel like it's about the nature of teenage girls. The singer is describing a teenage girl who charms everyone into being her friends so she can depend on them, who thinks she's "so torn and worn and wise," who believes she's got the world figured out, but whose "tender pride" is easily scalded because she's not really as grown up as she thinks she is. She'd like to think she can go anywhere and do anything, but as he points out to her in the last verse, "Should you want to cross the line, / Which way did you want to find?" She doesn't really know what she's doing after all, and luck won't get her as far as she thinks it will.
I'm not entirely sure about the meaning of "This evening I see you're about to get into / The ditch that your old man dug," but it fits what I'm hearing better than anything I've read so far. Perhaps it has to do with the girl breaking her father's rules about going out at night?

I think, if we're going by the theme of naivite, this line alludes to the fact that the girl has come up in the world mostly on the shoulders of her parents. She is a Daddy's girl, and her reliance on him to get through the harder things in life will be the ditch she is about to "get into" once she starts her journey on life's road alone.
In other words, the ditch her old man dug was how much he was always there for her when maybe she needed to learn how to be there for herself.

My take on this song is in line with some of the earlier ones-- whatever the specifics, he's pointing out to a girl he is seeing or has seen that she's using him as something that he isn't, and thinks her understanding of love is more mature (and probably more dramatic) than it really is. The tone of the very last line is so tired and almost bitter-- as though he has been trying to make her see and is finally giving up.

He's definitely talking about naivety. This song is amazing.
"But what you don't know is you're too young and eager to love." In my mind, that ^ is the key line to naivety in the song. You never know though, a lot of artitst write about general things with a serious hidden message, you know? The artist is really the only person who knows what it's about.
