I was wondering that as well. It may as simple as a reference to the time of year that he had this experience-- also, something about autumn makes me think of naivete and the feeling you have of going into a new year invincible (in high school and college, which might make sense based on the fact that the girl sounds as though she's young, maybe in college). Both sound as though they are about the realizations that come in youth, a kind of sudden sobriety as one realizes that one has been acting foolishly.
My take on this song is in line with some of the earlier ones-- whatever the specifics, he's pointing out to a girl he is seeing or has seen that she's using him as something that he isn't, and thinks her understanding of love is more mature (and probably more dramatic) than it really is. The tone of the very last line is so tired and almost bitter-- as though he has been trying to make her see and is finally giving up.
oh! I meant to point out the first lines of P&P -- "as someone sets light to the first fires of autumn, we settle down to cut ourselves apart." Seasonal reference, yknow.
