Are You Satisfied? Lyrics
I was pulling out my hair
The day I cut the deal
Chemically calm
Was I meant to feel happy?
that my life was just about to change
One life pretending to be
The cat who got the cream
Oh, everybody said
Marina is a dreamer
People like to tell you what you're gonna be
It's not my problem if you don't see what I see
And I do not give a damn if you don't believe
My problem is my problem
That I never am happy
It's my problem, it's my problem
That I never will succeed
Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?
High achiever don't you see
Baby, nothing comes for free
They say I am a control freak
Driven a greed to succeed
Nobody can stop me
'Cause it's my problem
If I want to pack up and run away
It's my business if I feel the need to
Smoke and drink and swear
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?
Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?
Are you satisfied with an easy ride?
Once you cross the line
Will you be satisfied?
Sad inside, in this life, unsatisfied, praying
Sad inside, in this life, unsatisfied, waiting
Are you satisfied with an average life
Do I need to fly to make my way in life
Are you satisfied with an easy ride
Once you cross the line
Will you be satisfied?

Wow. Pop music with meaning. Marina is a genius. With her pop sensibility I think she might be able to reach a wider audience than an alternative artist might. To me, this song is about understanding that if you're unhappy with something in your life, you have the power to change it. If you're depressed, seek help. If you're bored, do something fun, life is what you make it. A lot of people are self-defeating and do the opposite of what's going to help a negative situation.
Genius.
I don't know I kind of get a darker feeling from this song. I think it's more about the confusion Marina is having with still feeling dark and depressed even though things seem to be working out for her. I think she isn't satisfied with what's conventional and in a very conventional sense most people would think you shouldn't feel unhappy if you're getting big "breaks" into the industry.

Pop music with a meaning though, I love it and I <3 marina.

@italiancarne You're mixing the two sides in this song. She's essentially having an argument with the people who said "Marina is a dreamer"

Her point is that it's her life and its her problem to deal with. while the counterpoint she sees them making is "just be a normal average person and work at McDonnalds." And she poses the question "are you satisfied" with not reaching for your dreams.

Its a lot easier to have a blue collar job than to be a rock star, doctor, lawyer, et cetera.

I dont think its mocking at all. I think its the truth about her life she is never satisfied and questions how anyone could ever be satisfied with an average life. this album deals with mediocrity and how Marina is looking to be the best full stop at any costs.
its not her problem if you dont understand because she has her eye on the prize. on this, she decides that she is in fact satisfied with the journey to her destiny. "greed to succeed" - she is clearly troubled by some of its consequences but her hunger for this dream is clearly most important to her.
i have to say i think the album is a lot darker than people are making it out to be, which is of course the beauty of music. i do believe though as it is written it is the tale of someone troubled by this greed to succeed. it comes up so often, nearly every track. its most clear on "Are You Satisfied", "Rootless", "Numb", "Oh No!", "Mowgli's Road". brilliant album. i really connect with it. it hits too close to home a lot of the time but thats good sometimes
Another component, I feel that is essential, is that it's particularly aimed at people who told her she couldn't be famous and to "get real"

She's saying to them "why are you telling me I shouldn't try to make this dream of mine a reality? Its my dream/my life. Are you satisfied with not aiming for a goal that might be deemed 'impossible' or hard to achieve?"

Same thing can be said about wanting to be a lawyer or a doctor, et cetera. It really is pretty easy to make nothing out of your life....

Yes yes - this song is about understanding that if you're unhappy with something in your life, you have the power to change it. If you're depressed, seek help. If you're bored, do something fun, life is what you make it.

To me this is a song about being who you are and not giving a crap what people think, not conforming. She's mocking people that live their lives the way society dictates, asking if they're happy being average. But I think the interpretations above make a lot of sense too!
I think the whole meaning of the song is ofc not being satisfied enough with your life. People work, and they work, and they work, towards their dreams. We are told that we just have to work hard and will get there, but no one ever tells us that working to hard for something is bad, or that it's ok to not have this big job. Not everyone is going to become a lawyer, a singer, a doctor, or whatever their dream job is. It's ok to be a plumber, a low time chef, etc, people with lower jobs, help make a functioning society. Yet, we are told as children and adults, that we can be whatever we want, just reach for our dreams. So that's exactly what people do, and when you fail to get the job want, you feel terrible, bc no one said that there's a chance you may not get the job you want. If you do get the job, your never satisfied, then you have to face the reality that you worked for a job, you probably weren't mentally prepared for anyway, this is evident in jobs like singing and acting, where you are famous, have pressure, and a lot of times have little to no privacy.
This song talks about being different and wanting it to stay that way no matter what. She has a goal in her life and no matter what happens, she'll keep pursuing it. She keeps asking "us", the "listeners/spectators": "Hey, do you have a dream as well or do you just go with the flow?"
"Are you satisfied with an average life? Do I need to lie to make my way in life?
Are you satisfied with an easy ride? Once you cross the line will you be satisfied?"
With this, she wants to tell us she isn't happy with taking things easy, but fighting for them against all odds. She doesn't want to change her character just because she might have succeeded in one thing. There are many more things to do, much more to accomplish. She doesn't go with the flow, she cuts her way just the way she is. A fighter. A coward. A human.

My problem is my problem That I never am happy It's my problem, it's my problem On how fast I will succeed
Cause it's my problem If I wanna pack up and run away It's my business if I feel the need to Smoke and drink and swear
It's my problem, it's my problem If I feel the need to hide It's my problem if I have no friends And feel I want to die"
Sad inside because she's not quite accomplished yet, she prays for her future. Nevertheless, she's satisfied if all she has to do is wait and pray. She's not about to go change for anyone, will cut her path just the way she is, even if it takes years.
"Sad inside In this life I'm satisfied praying Sad inside In this life I'm satisfied waiting"
Constructive comments more than welcome.
Sigh, That was a pretty shallow analysis.

The challenge with her writing is that she tends to speak in multiple voices and point of views. Se sometimes talks backwards in her meaning.

Marina's song writing- or writing in general- is pretty complex and pretty distant from most cliche meanings. I'd love to see her attempt at writing a book.

Loving this song.
This song has a huge amount of meaning for me, because I totally agree with it. I think Marina is singing about how she needs her life to be something more than what other people have, she will never be satisfied with an average life, but she is happy to wait for her life to become extraodinary. I think that is the simple analysis, and that is exactly how I feel about life, and that's why I struggle not to cry everytime I hear this song.
Another analysis I think I can see is that the song is in two voices, one (presumably Marina) who wants a great, above average life, and another who just sits around withing for things to happen. I think Marina is the one who says lines like 'High achiever, don't you see? Baby, nothing comes for free They say I'm a control freak Driven by a greed to succeed Nobody can stop me' and, definately 'Are you satisfied with an easy ride? Once you cross the line will you be satisfied?'
And the other voice, which I think could be another side of Marina, like she is arguing with herself, has lines like 'Sad inside In this life I'm satisfied praying Sad inside In this life I'm satisfied waiting'
The second voice is happy to let life unfold, but they still want something amazing to happen, but the first voice wants to make it happen, because she's not satisfied with living like this. I think the second voice is the one who says the 'it's my problem' lines.
I absolutely love this song, it really gets me every time, it's basicly my anthem, because I want to decide which voice I am, because right now I'm the second, and I don't like that, and I think that's what the song it about. Just my opinion though, comments welcome.
To me it's basically criticizing the world. Are you satisfied with the say it is?

This really sticks out to me, because it's talking about how the world says that it's our fault if we're depressed, or if we're unsatisfied the world. Sometimes, however hard we try, we can't control our emotions.

People also have an idea about who we are and what we will...
People also have an idea about who we are and what we will and will not do, and they stick to it and its limitations. That's what this line says to me.
There's a lot more to this song, too, it's really deep.

oh oops, wrong song. MAH BAD.
