Dear God, I Hate Myself Lyrics

despair will hold a place in my heart
a bigger one than you do do do
and i will always be nicer to the cat
than i am to you you you you
dear God, i hate myself
dear God, i hate myself
and i will never be happy
and i will never feel normal
don't ask me is this line is about you
what do they do there tonite tonite?
why do they go there alright alright?
why do they live there tonite tonite?
and why do they live at all alright alright?
dear God, i hate myself
dear God, i hate myself
and i will never be happy
and i will never feel normal
why do they live there tonite tonite?
and why do they live at all alright alright?
flip off the mirror as protest
who the f-word are you you you?
and i will never be happy
and i will never feel normal
dear God, i hate myself
dear God, i hate myself

“The title came from a night a literally being on my knees and speaking these words in a prayer to God,” says Jamie Stewart. “It is about the tension between feeling hopeless but also feeling as if spiritual love is possible and there for you if you want it. The drum programming is a result of 1,000 hours of tiny, tiny edits and ruminations. However, the lyrics in a rare, present instance came all at once in about five minutes.”

there are some times where i've prayed to God - even though i've atheist - just "DEAR GOD, I HATE MYSELF". its a desperate sort of plea, confession, baseless hope. . . 'dear god i hate myself' - its sort of a mantra you repeat over and over 'i hate myself and want do die i hate myself and want to die'. . . i don't know what jamie stewart was meaning, but that's what i think when i hear this song. and it brings me to tears.

"What do they do there tonite, tonite? Why do they go there alright, alright? Why do they live there tonite tonite? And why do they live at all, alright, alright?"

Those lines remind me of how I sometimes feel about the other kids downtown. They're all out there, having fun, hanging out and doing whatever with their friends, while I'm alone wallowing in this song...

yes, i think this is about a desperate plea, about a feeling of self hatred, a cry for help maybe even.

This is the most emotional reaction I've had to a song... The first 4 lines give me a headache reading them.

I feel like this is a parody of modern Christianity, especially towards the end when he says "Flip off the mirror as protest. "Who the f-word are you?"". This is because it's "bad to swear" in strict christian households. Also, it's ironic that people got to religion to make them happier, but in this song he professes in prayer that that will never be the case for him.

So, in general, it seems to me that it reflects on how silly, strict rules can drive one mad in their longing for happiness.
