I Look To You Lyrics
Heaven hear me now
Im lost without a cause
After giving it my all
And darkened my sun
After all that I've been through
Who on earth can I turn to
I look to you
In you I can be strong
I look to you
In you I hear a song
There's no more fighting left
Sinking to rise no more
Searching for that open door
Lead to my regret
And I don't know if Im gonna make it
Nothing to do but lift my head
I look to you
In you I can be strong
I look to you
In you I hear a song
I need you
Shine on me
I look to you
in you I can be strong
I look to you
In you I hear a song
oooooooh
I look to you
Her new album represents her triumphant return to the music industry. For about a decade, Whitney Houston’s life has been marred with allegations of drug abuse, domestic violence and marriage troubles. The public has witnessed the demise of Whitney’s music career, her character, and her faith in God. She became like many other stars who lost their career to drugs/addiction. Many doubted her return to the music industry and rehabilitation from her addiction. “I Look to You” portrays how she was able to recover and return to herself.
The Chorus states:
I look to you/ I look to you/After all my strength is gone/In you I can be strong/
I look to you/I look to you/And when melodies are gone In you I hear a song/I look to you
This chorus explains Whitney’s solution in her road to recovery. All efforts and beliefs we have in ourselves are insufficient. Jesus is our strength, our song, our Savior; He is our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6-7) When we have Jesus and we look to Him, He will provide all that we need and lead us to Him. The chorus also gives us hope. We can see the true power of Jesus’ work in Whitney. We can see that because she looks to Jesus, she has the victory.
During her interview with Oprah, when she released this album, she stated that she is continuing to fight and battle her addiction. Recently, Whitney Houston has been in the news regarding rumors of her odd behaviors again, as well as her concert facing many criticisms. This song reflects her constant prayer and state of heart, where she must look to God for strength, courage and salvation. These verses, “…Searching for that open door/And every road that I’ve taken/Led to my regret…” speaks to us about how only Jesus is the way, the truth and the light. We pray that Whitney continue to find strength in God and be courageous and victorious in her struggles.
It's seems clear to me that this song is about dying, being too tired to go on, and being ready to meet God. Plainly, it's spiritual and beautiful. Deep.
Notice how many "I" and "Me" are in this song. Consider who is really singing.
The song says "As I lay me down" but in Psalm 23:2 it says: He makes me to lie down in green pastures. Heaven hear me now (2 Chronicles 7:14_ If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I (God) hear from heaven) I'm lost without a cause (Luke 15:32We had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found) After giving it my all (2 Corinthians 12:9 "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness) Winter storms have come (Psalm 83:15 He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed) And darkened my sun (Matthew 24:29-30 Immediately after the distress of those days "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' 30"Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory) After all that I've been through, Who on earth can I turn to (Isaiah 45:22 "Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other) I look to you, I look to you (Micah 7:7 I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. After all my strength is gone, In you I can be strong (Exodus 15:2 The Lord is my strength and my song; he has given me victory) In you I hear a song. (Ephesians 5:19 …Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the LORD. After losing my breath (Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.) There's no more fighting left (2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith) Sinking to rise no more (Jeremiah 51:64 Then say, “So will Babylon sink to rise no more because of the disaster I will bring on her. And her people will fall.”) Searching for that open door (Revelation 3:-8 "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of Him who is Holy and True, … What He opens no one can shut… 8I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.) And every road that I've taken (Matthew 7:14 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.) Led to my regret (Matthew 27:5) And I don't know if I'm gonna make it (Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope) And when all my strength is gone , In you I can be strong (Nehemiah 8:10 Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. All the rain is falling (Joel 2:23 Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the Lord your God, for He has given you the autumn rains because He is faithful.) Set me free (Job 33:28 God set me free. He kept me from going down into the grave. So I will live to enjoy the light that leads to life.) Take me far away from the battle (2 Chronicles 35:23 (King Josiah(He) did not listen to Neco’s words from the mouth of God, but went to fight him on the Plain of Megiddo. There the archers shot King Josiah, who said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am severely wounded!”) I need you, Shine on me (John 1:5 The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you.)
Whitney's 2009 song that was supposed to be part of her comeback. She sings to God asking for strength and affirming His presence to guide her in her life. RIP Whitney, who will be buried tomorrow after a NJ baptist church service for family and friends (in the same church she sang in so long ago). Another talented vocalist to leave us too soon...
What a beautiful song. This demonstrates Whitney's mastery in the gospel music genre. Sung by a different artist, someone without the life challenges she faced could sing this for you, and you'd think 'pretty song'. Whitney literally rips her heart out for this song and one can hear in her voice all the struggle and pain she has lived in her life. In this recording, she simply sings to God, as deep in prayer, full of question, regret, joy, innocence and heartache.
It literally moves me to tears each and every time I hear it.
