I believe the children are our are future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be
And so I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Because the greatest
Love of all is happening to me
I found the greatest
Love of all inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Because the greatest
Love of all is happening to me
I found the greatest
Love of all inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
Is the greatest love of all

And if, by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

If I fail if I succeed as least i'll live as I believed I love that line in the song as it makes me believe that i really don't need to follow in anyone's footsteps to succeed, but to follow my own heart. One of the most inspirational songs ever. Thank you Whitney for moving us with this song. I love it.

This song could be interpreted by some as a person who can't find love and so, sadly, chooses to turn to just themselves. On the contrary, this song is all about loving yourself because that's the most important thing to do.

Very insightful lyrics written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed. To quote from THE WOMEN'S CLINIC HOME PAGE [rickmd.com/] 'This is a very popular song. If you want to get an idea of how hard it is for people to love themselves, pose this question, "You know the song "Greatest Love of All" by Whitney Houston. What does she say is the greatest love of all?" Many know the song well, but can't give the correct answer, because they are too uncomfortable to have heard the real message.'

It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

I think as humans evolve, grow and assess their life and life experiences they most likely come to this realization. This song is real and she told it like it was/is.

This song makes me cringe. Self-centred navel-gazing. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends"

    My Interpretation
first verse: first is the perspective of our future. song talks about our future. the children. I believe the children are our future - perspective, setting the tone in looking forward. Teach them well and let them lead the way - if they are the future, we should lead them. Show them all the beauty they possess inside - encourage the future. Give them a sense of pride to make it easier - sense of accountability, ownership. Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be - they are the direct reflection of ourselves 2nd verse: second is, the tone of a normal person. 9 out of 10 a person thinks. Everybody's searching for a hero - this is us People need someone to look up to - yes we do I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs - this however, the composer inserted his own perspective. A lonely place to be And so I learned to depend on me - based on the composer's experience he learned. Chorus: The composer talks about his experience, life is full of failure and success. I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows - dont imitate someone, be yourself. If I fail, if I succeed At least I'll live as I believe - your own experiences teaches you, and gives you accountability and ownership of your failures. No matter what they take from me They can't take away my dignity - other people say your wrong but you know you can trust to depend on what you believe in, and be strong that way. Because the greatest love of all Is happening to me - the composer says the reason is that the greatest love is evident in his life. I found the greatest love of all Inside of me - again declaration, that greatest love is within The greatest love of all Is easy to achieve - if its easy you and I can probably do it too. Learning to love yourself It is the greatest love of all - this is very deep. let me try to enumerate. loving ourselves amounts to many different things. - we respect ourselves - we are confident - we know that God is actually Love itself. ok the reason why this is, is because God teaches love. here is the love that Jesus is talking about. “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’c This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ if you love God, you will love everyone else and yourself too. if you love God, it means you will know respect, you will know peace, you will know how important self esteem is. God is love and this is what the song is saying. the composer found the greatest Love of all.

I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.

Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.

@[Kahiara:35260] Actually I think the husband passed away, "She sang for you last night She heard you were calling" Many people say they have felt, heard, or seen their loved ones after they have passed. "Don't be scared now Close your eyes She holds guard tonight Go on forward no remorse Life will take it's course" This is said to the late husband by a third part (never named), who encourages him to pass on. Because life will eventually continue. The phrase "holds guard" refers to the ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake_(ceremony) ) which is a Christian ceremony held after someone dies. Now it is usually held right after the funeral, but in most celtiic countries the wake is held before the funeral. "She danced with you last night so you will remember All you have shared, a lifetime." This sentence feels as if the only thing it wants to convey is their history together, namely, husband and wife. For the rest it just refers back to the first verse.

Moyet later described how her song "Goodbye 70's" had been inspired by her disillusionment with how the late-1970s punk scene had turned out, saying, "'Goodbye 70's' is about punk and not caring how you were dressed, and then I discovered that so many of my friends that I'd thought it all really meant something to just saw it as another trend... That's what 'Goodbye 70's' was all about, about how sour the whole thing became."
