This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
You go for a walk in the park
'Cause you don't need anything
The hand that you sometimes hold
Doesn't do anything
The face that you see in the door
Isn't standing there anymore
In a matter of time
It would slip from my mind
In and out of my life
You would slip from my mind
In a matter of time
The face that you saw in the door
Isn't looking at you anymore
The name that you call in its place
Isn't waiting for your embrace
The world that you love to behold
Cannot hold you
Anymore
In a matter of time
It would slip from my mind
In and out of my life
You would slip from my mind
In a matter of time
More, you want more
More, you want more
More, you want more, you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more, you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more, you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more, you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more, you tell me, more
'Cause you don't need anything
The hand that you sometimes hold
Doesn't do anything
The face that you see in the door
Isn't standing there anymore
In a matter of time
It would slip from my mind
In and out of my life
You would slip from my mind
In a matter of time
The face that you saw in the door
Isn't looking at you anymore
The name that you call in its place
Isn't waiting for your embrace
The world that you love to behold
Cannot hold you
Anymore
In a matter of time
It would slip from my mind
In and out of my life
You would slip from my mind
In a matter of time
More, you want more
More, you want more
More, you want more, you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more, you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more, you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more, you tell me
More, only time can run me
More, you want more, you tell me, more

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
I think this song is about getting over a breakup, and being so aware of the other person's absence from your life because you're so accustomed to it, "The face that you see in the door isn't standing there anymore" , and saying that only time can really fix it when the relationship only becomes a memory and then begins to fade, "In a matter of time it, would slip from my mind".. I'm not sure about the last bit, maybe the other person changing their mind about ending the relationship but the idea of it not being able to penetrate the numbness..this song is so beautiful and true
This is one of my favorite songs of 2010. What I take away from "Walk in the Park" is how time has a way of changing everything- looks, relationships, the world in general. It's a very sad song.
As for "you want more"- it could be the person she is in a relationship with wants more from her but she is saying time is the only thing that possesses her.
This is a gorgeous song - my favorite by them. I really dig how the music gets a little darker during the "more.." part of the song. I think it's about a relationship ending before it actually gets too serious (i.e. the hand that you sometimes hold, the face that you see in the door, in and out of my life) - it makes me think they aren't a full-on couple and maybe don't live together, just dating - but one person wants more from the other, a committment. i want to think that "only time can run me" means that time might run her down to settle and stay in it, but that's probably off base. Either way, it means what it means to the listener and it's a kick ass song regardless!
What a beautiful song, it really take me to other side
I almost feel like the end is what the fella would be saying to her. He wanted more than she had to offer and her response is that only time had only ever really been there to tend to her and mend her. Almost like it was there or going to be there more than she knew this guy was. Also maybe because this is a reoccuring event. That people pass in and out of her life and she consistently finds herself falling back into the hands of time, so shes use to it, though it still hurts and takes time. I really like how round her words sound. For some reason it reminds me of the movie LEGEND or maybe even Fern Gullie.
The tone of this song is very depressing. " You go for a walk in the park because you don't need anything...The hand that you sometimes hold doesn't do anything..the world that you loved to behold... etc." In a matter of time, you'll eventually be let down- is what beach house is bringing out through these lyrics. When you experience so many disappointments you feel all dried and hopeless. It's hard to give "more" after a certain extent because you've been damaged emotionally. This problem will exist" In and out of your life" until you let your disappointments slip away with the passing of time.
@hearingtruely Absolutely... As if shes counting down to when this feeling will dissipate so she "goes for a walk in he park" she is very uneasy and shes holding her hand in wait for the time to pass, because she wants to forget "it's only a matter of time" (temporary) and then this becomes like a ritual for her...an then she repeats <br /> More, you want more, you tell me<br /> <br /> <br />
I'm in love with this song. Beach House is amazing, see them live if you get the chance!
Has anyone considered that this song could possibly be about dealing with the actual physical death of a partner?
Yes. I have.
I think for the first stanza, the correct lyrics of the last two lines are:
The face that you see in the door, isn't standing there anymore
The third stanza may also start with "The" instead of "Your", but I'm not sure. I also can't tell if it's "The word that you learned to behold" or "The world..."
By the way I really like this song :)
in the last part, i get ''more, you want more, you tempt me.."<br /> <br />
time can know you? are you sure?
I think this song is talking about breaking up. It could be that the narrator is wanting to lay out just what that means for the other person, hence the "in a matter of time, you would slip from my mind." It's about not knowing what you have until it is gone.
The end makes me think the reason for break up is because its too controlling of a relationship (maybe even abusive) when she sing's "only time can run me" and "more, you want more."
