Hell on the Throat Lyrics
A line of strands to mark the trail, no one said it would be easy.
I must admit I thought the risk was better waged in younger seasons, but all these years in the cold play hell on the throat till everything I say burns like cinders, why it’s hard to belong to a girl or a song and the crease of a strangling winter
It’s strange to be lost, stranger still to be lone in the strings of a twisting line.
Along the way the turns are sharp, no one said they would be easy, I must admit I thought the trip was better in younger seasons. But all these years in the pursuit made a man of a fool, till every word I say is on waver.
Why it’s hard to belong to a girl or a song in the case of a selfish believer, it’s strange to be lost and stranger still to be lone in the strings in a twisting line x 2
And when the path I have made from the grass to the grave, I will love you still. And when the sand turns to glass and all that’s left is the past and I will love you still.
Along the way the turns are sharp, no one said they would be easy, I must admit I thought the trip was better in younger seasons. But all these years in the pursuit made a man of a fool, till every word I say is on waver.

I think the song is about finding love in later years. The man suspects love might have been sweeter in younger years.
He compares his loveless years and their effect on him with years in the cold and their effect on one's throat. The effect they have is similar--that it is hard to speak. While the cold has this effect literally, the figurative meaning refers to an inability to communicate. In this cold atmosphere, which he compares to "the crease of a strangling winter," he finds it hard to belong to the woman he loves.
He then looks back on the years he spent in other pursuits. While he considers them foolish, he credits them for making a man out of himself, and for granting the waiver he now has to say the things which he couldn't say before.
While he emphasizes that love is still hard, he closes with a simple promise of faithfulness.
Well said.
Well said.
If I got the lyrics wrong anywhere, tell me. I Think I got the "lone in the strings" wrong.

Well it's hard to belong to a girl or a song And the crease of a strangling winter It's strange to be lost, stranger still to belong On the strings of a twisting line.

And when the path I have made From the grass to the grave, I will love you still. And when the sand turns to glass And all that's left is the past And I will love you still.
Yeah you got a couple lyrics wrong but most of it is right. What I think this song is about is God. "Why I think its hard to belong in the case of a selfish Believer" I'm taking it as he's talking about how hard it is to committ to certain things when you believe in God because you want to follow God, and the flesh (girls, songs) isn't right so its hard to belong to that. You want to do what is best for you. Then the last verses "and when the path I have made from grass to grave, I will love you still. ANd when the sand turns to glass and all thats left is the past I will love you still." There is no way this is about a girl. No way. This is a prasie and thanks to the Lord not a promise to a girl. Definitely a worship to God. I see a lot of this in this album, very interesting. Its not the whole album but you can see a lot of growth in Chris's life throughout this album's lyrics. I love it.
When he's saying "it's hard to belong to a girl" you're interpreting it as commitment to God? Wow! If this was a song about God then it would clearly say it. But it no way does it elude to God. Who writes love songs to God anyways? It's about a broken relationship.

Pretty sure the "be lone in the strings" is "belong in the strings" but I'm not certain.
Also I love this song.
There is this one sentence I just don't get. It's nearly the last line: "And when the path I have made from the grass to the grave". It is not even a real sentence, is it? Would be thankful for answers, I just registered for this!
He's referring to the "path" of his entire life, from all the places he's been (literally and figuratively) in life (the grass) ending to his inevitable death. He's saying that even after everything is said and done, he will love "you" until he dies.

i think it's about something he's been hiding from his fans way back around 2002. He's thinking of some bad reactions from his fans from this.
the line... "Why its hard to belong to a girl or a song in the case of a selfish believer"
it's pretty obvious. but hey, the guy is awesome, and "it" doesn't matter. He's making amazing songs for us to enjoy and relate to.
