Blasphemy Lyrics

The egyptians built their pyramids
the Romans did what they did.
Now everything's come down to this,
it's just you and I our kid.
We could send a million to the moon
but why can't I get on with you?
With cellophane around my mouth...
Stops the anger seeping out.

Our deaf and dumb dinners
gravy in the mud
No singles - Just fillers
Sometimes I wish I could, but..
I can't behave.
And no, it's not the heathen in me
it's just that I've been bleeding lately...internally.
Don't turn to me.
Bite your tongue the torrid weapon,
You could learn a useful lesson,
what's so great about the Great Depression?
Was it a blast for you?
...'cause it's blasphemy.

Words cut like a knife through vaseline,
you can't really mean what you mean
when you say what you say...
Tourettes make them come out that way.
Wish you were here,
well I wish you weren't.
Your gift of anger's better burnt,
if nothing's said then nothing's learnt.
I thought I wasn't but I'm really hurting.

Our deaf and dumb dinners
there's gravy in the mud
and...
I can't behave.
No, it's not the heathen in me
It's just that I've been bleeding lately...internally.
Don't turn to me.
And I'll bite my tongue the torrid weapon,
I could learn a useful lesson,
what's so great about the Great Depression?
Was it a blast for you?
...blasphemy.

Our great adventure,
Christmas in the snow.
Senile dementia maybe...
What a way to go.

I can't behave
and no, it's not the heathen in me
It's just that I've been bleeding lately...internally.
So turn to me,
But bite your tongue the torrid weapon
We could learn a useful lesson.
Ain't it great this Great Depression
It's not a blast for me
,..It's blasphemy.

This song is about a guy who has depression but seems to be blaming his other half in the first part of the song where he says:" Is it a blast for you" implying she is the one who is to blame for the state he is in. But by the end of the song he turns it on himself by saying: "Its not a blast for me." Very subtle changes to the words confirm his own realisation that most people blame depression on others until they realise it themselves then they are more able to look for help in treating it. His description of "putting cellophane around my mouth to stop the anger seeping out" is a great description for how you feel when you are depressed. You blame everyone else except yourself. Robbie has had bouts of deprssion so his first hand account of it is spot on in my view.

I agree with you in everything!

I think it is simply about Robbie's problem with depression and a propensity to say mean things (maybe even blasphemous?) when he is in that state of mind. In the lyrics, he blames Tourette's, which many think is synonymous with copralalia -- unintentional swearing. (In reality, it is an uncommon symptom of Tourette's Syndrome, affecting less than 10% of people with it.) I think he is telling us that he says things he shouldn't because of his depression and that while his bitter tongue is unpleasant for others, it is certainly no blast for him either.

My Interpretation

its about the gallaghers. its obvious. robbie commenting on their terrible relationship as brothers and the things they publicly say about each other. it harks back to robbies brief freindship with them. i think the song maybe also wriiten in dark humour. a dig from rob. "our KId" is how the brothers refer to each other in conversation its not native to robbies speech.

In the book called 'Feel' which was written by Chris Heath in 2004, and which I can highly recommend to anyone (Heath spent about 18 months living with Rob), Rob says that this song 'is about making loads of friends and realising they're all cunts.' According to this book, Blasphemy was written in about half an hour, and it may have been the last song that Rob and Guy Chambers have ever written together.

I really like the way Rob 'plays' with the words in this one ('blasphemy' / 'blast for me'). For example, the line: 'What's so great about the Great Depression?' is based on double meanings. 'Great' means something being 'huge', but it also means something being 'awesome'. 'The Great Depression' is part of the American history, but it can also mean that Rob is 'deeply depressed'. In other words, Rob might be as well asking, 'What is so amazing about being deeply depressed?' as he might be referring to the history.

Anyway, Rob really seems to be going through hard times in this one. He is disappointed by certain person (people) and doesn't understand why it has gone wrong. He knows he is not handeling the whole problem very well himself ('I can't behave'), but he really seems to blame the other person from the fact that they can't get on.

it's sounds like a falling out, maybe a break up. maybe it is about the gallaghers, or his relationship with nicole appleton? or perhaps, (which i find a more compelling argument) himself and Guy Chambers.

My Opinion

This is the only song from the new album 'Reality Killed the Video Star' that I actually like, and after watching the electic proms opening night with Robbie it became clear why... This is the last song written between Robbie and Guy Chambers, around the time of 'Escapology' - Robbie's last decent album. It all makes sense now. This song is classic Robbie, none of that Pet Shop Boys rubbish.
