"Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Yeah, so instead of saying something like "don't rush, it's a bad idea" she is more saying "don't rush" and then adressing a person.<br /> And then the bridge is kind of going agaisnt what she said in the verses. If the bad idea is a person then she is talking about how to erase this person.

You guys will get a KICK out of this. In an interview, Tegan said this song was originally called "Bad Idea" because that was the name she had the girl she was interested in listed as. And, this was her reminder to not call too much, don't rush .. have a reminder in your phone to not call her when drunk or sad or something that will rush things in that state or mind .....because it's a BAD IDEA.
I know the line: "They'll buy your restless cover (?)" is something else, I just can't tell. The last word sounds like it could be "covet," I don't know.

"you've loved so many others"? i think she's refering to the girl she has dated or currently been dating, i read that the girl has never dated a girl until tegan. like 'others' meant boys/guys
