The Violet Hour Lyrics

Your lips are nettles,
Your tongue is wine.
Your laughter's liquid,
But your body's pine.
You love all sailors,
But hate the beach.
You say come touch me,
But your always out of reach.

In the dark you tell me of the flowers,
That only blooms in the violet hour.

Your arms are lovely,
Yellow and rose.
Your back's a meadow,
Covered in snow.
Your thighs are thistles,
And hot house grapes.
You breathe your sweet breath,
And have me wait.

In the dark you tell me of the flowers,
That only blooms in the violet hour.

I turned the lights out,
I cleaned the sheets.
You changed the station,
Turned up the heat.
And now your sailing,
Upon your chair.
You got me tangled up,
Inside with your beautiful black hair.

In the dark you tell me of the flowers,
That only blooms in the violet hour.
In the dark you tell me of the flowers,
That only blooms in the violet hour.

Your lips are nettles, Your tongue is wine. Your laughter's liquid, But your body's pine. You love all sailors, But hate the beach. You say "Come touch me", But you're always out of reach.

Chorus: In the dark you tell me of a flower, that only blooms in the violet hour.

My Interpretation

Um, the meaning seems pretty clear to me. The flower that blooms in the violet hour is certain part of a woman's body. Re-read the lyrics with this in mind and it all makes perfect sense.

Song Meaning

Doh, I submitted before I was ready. . .

"Your lips are nettles, Your tongue is wine."

Pretty self-explanatory if you are familiar with the "location" in question.

"Your laughter's liquid, But your body's pine."

Shuttering and stiffening of the body or possibly contrasting the secretions with the hardness of the clit.

"You love all sailors, But hate the beach."

Sailors are seamen, aren't they? Don't know what the beach refers to though. Any thoughts?

"In the dark you tell me of a flower, that only blooms in the violet hour."

This is what I heard in the song:

your lips are nettles your tongue is wine your laughter's liquid but your body's pine you love all sailors but hate the beach you say "come touch me" but you're always out of reach

in the dark you tell me of a flower that only blooms in the violet hour

your arms are lovely yellow and rose your back's a meadow covered in snow your thighs are thistles and ? grapes you breathe a sweet breath and have me wait

in the dark you tell me of a flower that only blooms in the violet hour

i turn the lights out i clean the sheets you changed the station turned up the heat and now you're sailing upon your chair you got me tangled up inside your beautiful black hair

in the dark you tell me of a flower that only blooms in the violet hour

in the dark you tell me of a flower that only blooms in the violet hour

yeah nettles + meadow sound way better then metal lol thanks! =]

I believe the line is:

"your thighs are thistles and hothouse grapes."

It's an interesting picture. Some vintners believe that planting the roots outside keeps the plant stronger, but they guide the more fragile stems into the hothouse through a hole in the wall by the ground. That protects the delicate fruit.

I love the word pictures and contrasts in this song.

I see it as this guy is comparing his love to wine and wine-related things.. meaning he is possibly intoxicated by her and her beauty, for it seems he is really in love with this woman.

I also see that they do have a strong relationship, but like every relationship, have their troubles. "you say come touch me, but you are always out of reach" just simple say one thing and do the opposite type of thing, nothing enough to cause a break up, but possibly make the relationship stronger..

Also, not yet sure how i would react to being compared to wine.

This song was playing in the background in the birthday scene in New Moon. I love the song... It's sort of happy. I think it goes well with the moment right before the attack in the film, because things seem to be going great.

I'm not a huge Sea Wolf fan but I have my first taste in '07 and I liked it, it's kind of odd that they're on the New Moon soundtrack too, but it's cool.

The missing line is:

Your thighs are thistles and hothouse grapes

This is my favorite song on the album. It's probably the happiest one. I have no idea hat the meaning is. It seems completely random. lol

OKAY! So I fell in love with this song a while back, and mostly only knew what the chorus and first verse meant....this is actually a pretty sketchy song, but I adore it. I think it was picked for New Moon as an allusion to Edward and Bella's relationship (yuck), which is all about NOT having sex. Which is what the song's about (boy wants her to, girl likes to be flirty but not ready yet). I sort of think Bella's more like the guy singing here, though, than Edward. Edward's like the girl in this song.

your lips are nettles your tongue is wine

{[her lips say some pretty hurtful stuff (stinging/nettles) but her kissing's good enough to make up for it?}}

your laughter's liquid but your body is pine

{{it's easy to make her laugh...not so easy to get her in bed}}

you love all sailors but hate the beach

{{she's flirty (see: loves sailors) but always contradicts herself}}

you say come touch me but you're always out of reach

{{more contradicting herself...likes to tease but she's too scared to get intimate with this guy}}

in the dark you tell me of a flower that only blooms in the violet hour

{{whole point of the song: the girl tells him about this rare flower, without knowing she's talking about herself...she'll be ready/bloom eventually, but she needs time. hence, violet hour (last color/hour of the day)}}

your arms are lovely yellow and rose your back's a meadow covered in snow your thighs are thistles and hothouse grapes you breathe your sweet breath and have me wait

{{just a bunch of compliments from the guy...he calls her thighs (SKETCHY!) unwelcoming thistles cuz he's obviously not getting any action, and calls them hothouse grapes (grapes grown inside, not outside) because he thinks she's a little naive...the rest is self-explanatory}}

i turn the lights out i clean the sheets

{{well, think what you want, sounds to me like she eventually decided to have sex with this guy, and he's talking about afterwards...}}

you change the station turn up the heat

{{and she's just chilling, listening to music and pretty much in love with him}}

and now you're sitting upon your chair you got me tangled up inside your beautiful black hair

{{and now, he's treating her like a princess (sitting upon a chair/throne) because she's got him crazy in love}}

My Interpretation

Thanks! Finally someone who gets the real meaning of this great song!

i think you got it right on! this is perfect exactly what i had thought at the beginning except not as much detail. thank you!!
