OKAY! So I fell in love with this song a while back, and mostly only knew what the chorus and first verse meant....this is actually a pretty sketchy song, but I adore it. I think it was picked for New Moon as an allusion to Edward and Bella's relationship (yuck), which is all about NOT having sex. Which is what the song's about (boy wants her to, girl likes to be flirty but not ready yet). I sort of think Bella's more like the guy singing here, though, than Edward. Edward's like the girl in this song.
your lips are nettles
your tongue is wine
{[her lips say some pretty hurtful stuff (stinging/nettles) but her kissing's good enough to make up for it?}}
your laughter's liquid
but your body is pine
{{it's easy to make her laugh...not so easy to get her in bed}}
you love all sailors
but hate the beach
{{she's flirty (see: loves sailors) but always contradicts herself}}
you say come touch me
but you're always out of reach
{{more contradicting herself...likes to tease but she's too scared to get intimate with this guy}}
in the dark you tell me of a flower
that only blooms in the violet hour
{{whole point of the song: the girl tells him about this rare flower, without knowing she's talking about herself...she'll be ready/bloom eventually, but she needs time. hence, violet hour (last color/hour of the day)}}
your arms are lovely
yellow and rose
your back's a meadow covered in snow
your thighs are thistles and hothouse grapes
you breathe your sweet breath and have me wait
{{just a bunch of compliments from the guy...he calls her thighs (SKETCHY!) unwelcoming thistles cuz he's obviously not getting any action, and calls them hothouse grapes (grapes grown inside, not outside) because he thinks she's a little naive...the rest is self-explanatory}}
i turn the lights out
i clean the sheets
{{well, think what you want, sounds to me like she eventually decided to have sex with this guy, and he's talking about afterwards...}}
you change the station
turn up the heat
{{and she's just chilling, listening to music and pretty much in love with him}}
and now you're sitting upon your chair
you got me tangled up inside your beautiful black hair
{{and now, he's treating her like a princess (sitting upon a chair/throne) because she's got him crazy in love}}
