Oh Yeah Lyrics
Oh yeah, Oh yeah
Oh yeah, Oh yeah
Oh yeah
And if god does exist
I am sure he will forgive
Me for doubting for he'd see
How unlikely he himself seems
Oh yeah, Oh yeah
Oh yeah, Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah, Oh yeah
Oh yeah
I am sure he will forgive
Me for doubting for he'd see
How unlikely he himself seems
Oh yeah, Oh yeah
Oh yeah

They played this on Letterman a few nights ago. Sounded quite good, indeed. Hopefully it won't be their last album as BtoS.
@A_Raging_Bull It won't be their last album as Built To Spill, but it will be their last appearance on Letterman.

The sound is just everything I could hope for in a song, and says exactly what I think God would feel about my doubt toward his existence.
this is such an awesome song to get high as balls to
you're telling me... when it gets into the solo it's absolutely mind blowing

This album is my new favorite toking album. They are almost like an indie jam band with this album. Man I fucking love Built To Spill.

this is bound to make just about anyone smile.
For such a "spiritual" album, this song is the nucleus of it. And you have to respect when a songwriter can sum up such a brilliant piece of work with 4 lines, with one stanza, he collectively unites, in my opinion, countless beliefs of God and makes it look so easy when you see the words in black and white. I never was that big of a fan before this album, but after just one listen, I'm sold...
Does anyone know why he says "seems" instead of just "seem"? I mean he says seem at first but then for some reason trails the "s" at the end. What's with that?
Its the proper way of writing it. You'd say : "He'd see how unlikely he himself seems" not "He'd see how unlikely he himself seem".

He (God) would see how unlikely he himself (God) seems [to the songwriter].

I'm not much of a religious person and don't know the leanings of the song writer, but I have read a few things regarding the songwriter being critical of the teachings of some religions in how they use fear to push people to believe certain things. For example, a religion could tell people that if they don't believe in and give themselves up to God then they will go to Hell when they die. Criticism of this way of teaching through fear is a common theme in BTS songs (see: Randy Describes Eternity).
In this particular song, to me, it seems the songwriter is simply saying that if God really does exist, he is sure that God will forgive him for doubting that God exists because of how seemingly unlikely it is that God exists.
I feel this same way. I mean... God gives us little proof of his existence. It is easy for me to doubt His existence. If he does exist, however, I think he'd forgive me for doubting him since I'm just a human. I think an all knowing God would know that it is hard for me to believe in him 100% and that casting me to Hell for all eternity for my skepticism is a pretty harsh judgement.
