First light is the symbol for the glimmer of hope for peace which is never achieved. Perhaps a modern day interpretation of the struggle in the middle east and the hopelessness of resolving such deep-rooted turmoil. Although Nick Holmes mentioned that Faith Divides Us Death Unites US was not intended to be a concept album, there are undertones of anti-religious sentiment revealed in a few songs and possibly here. Mackintosh's wailing guitar represents the murderous force that kills off this straggling first light. It is a tormented awakening to a death march in hell.
