(Once again) I read an interview with Nick where he said that this song was a reaction to the way people (especially "up North" in his own words) didn't want the band to succeed and were badmouthing them.
Once again, it could be about drug addiction also, perhaps there's a lot of double-entendre and different interpretations are possible...
Sounds a lot like politics nowadays. Kick ass song, great lyrics. Wish the idiots in political offices would listen to it and maybe come to some realization about the way their country feels about them..
