Down with the Shine Lyrics
down with the shine, the perfect shine
that poisons the well and ruins my mind
i get took for a ride, every time
down with the glistening shine
its in with the new, and out with the old
out goes the warmth, and in comes the cold
its the most predictable story told
in with the young, out with the old
down with the shine, the perfect shine
it poisons the well and ruins my mind
i get took for a ride, every time
down with the glistening shine
a belly full of high dollar wine, a fat hand, a fat wallet too
things change and get strange, with the movement of time.
its happening right now to you.
down with the shine, the perfect shine
it poisons the well and ruins my mind
i get took for a ride, every time
down with the glistening shine
its a real bad time to bring up the truth
but we searched we found no fountain of youth
not in spain no where near any where close to here
theres nothing good cause nothing last
and all that comes it comes here to pass
i will voice my pain but the change wouldnt last
all that comes it comes here to pass
down with the shine, the perfect shine
it poisons the well and ruins my mind
i get took for a ride, every time
down with the glistening shine
i get took for a ride, every time
down with the glistening shine
i said down with the glistening shine.
that poisons the well and ruins my mind
i get took for a ride, every time
down with the glistening shine
out goes the warmth, and in comes the cold
its the most predictable story told
in with the young, out with the old
it poisons the well and ruins my mind
i get took for a ride, every time

Great Song! I agree, I want to see this on an album. Although I guess it is a nice treat for the fans that come out and see them live. This song teaches a great lesson not to get caught up in the moment when things are going really well (or really bad). Enjoy it, but dont let it get to you because it won't last forever. This is probably referring to how their fan base has grown lately and their widespread popularity. Or it could be about moonshine, who knows, either way its got a great sound!
Awesome. Hope this is on the next studio album.
It seems to me this song is expressing the view that materialism is a sure path to unhappiness. Whether it be Buddhist teachings or the words of Jesus Christ many religions and spiritual ideologies teach that desire for worldly possessions is the root of our sorrows and longings. This seems to be the message of this tune. The words "I get took for a ride every time" are among my favorites because it shows how we fool our selves into thinking that by buying the newest and "best" new things we will be fulfilled but instead we spiral into a lifestyle of needless consumption. One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands.
simple thinking: it's about the pleasures of drinking moonshine and how it can relieve stresses, but also poisons the mind and body at the same time.
I totally disagree that this song has anything to do about moonshine. the song is about the passing of time, and the idea that 'this too, shall pass'. except when people use 'this too shall pass' they mean it also in a way that when things are really bad, they can't stay bad for long and will eventually turn around...but this song only focuses on the new shiny things getting broken or young things turning old. kind of a sad morbid view really.
the song states "down with the shine" think of a new shiny car. you drive it real slow, clean off every spot, yell at people for attempting to eat food in it. then a few years later the cars not new anymore. its lost its new car smell. you throw food rappers all over and let the bird poop sit on the windshield.
the song is about the inevitable passing of time, and how nobody or nothing can escape it
wells will eventually become polluted and undrinkable, minds will slip into dementia, seasons will continue to change, the young get old and die etic. other imagery include the rich person who will eventually succumb to greed etc, and the overall hopelessness of the situation that there is nothing we can do to stop the passing of time and death.
again...NOT about moonshine. at all.
.
@peetee32 I think it could be about both. There's more than one side to every story and none of us can ever really know for sure what the song's about, so let's not shoot down any ideas.

The artist did an interview stating the song is his anger and disapproval of the desire for material possessions rotting our society. But what does the song mean to you. Whether you think the song is about material possessions or about moonshine... You're right. After all, doesn't moonshine "poison the well and ruin the mind"?
To me, "down with the shine" is another way of saying "boo to glitzy, superficial things." If you get caught up in materialism and the superficial beauty of pretty-but-shallow people and objects you'll poison your mind and get taken for a ride that you'll regret. It's a fool's errand, chasing the fountain of youth and never-aging new shiny things. Instead, embrace aging, the timeless things in life, love, and family.
