It seems to me this song is expressing the view that materialism is a sure path to unhappiness. Whether it be Buddhist teachings or the words of Jesus Christ many religions and spiritual ideologies teach that desire for worldly possessions is the root of our sorrows and longings. This seems to be the message of this tune. The words "I get took for a ride every time" are among my favorites because it shows how we fool our selves into thinking that by buying the newest and "best" new things we will be fulfilled but instead we spiral into a lifestyle of needless consumption.
