Into The Nothing Lyrics
Screaming on the inside
I am frail and withered
Cover up the wounds
That I can't hide
Walls that lie between us
The saint within the sinner
I have lost the nerve
But it's all right
Carry the wounded and shut your eyes
All will be forgiven
None will rise
Bury the fallen and lead the blind
I will fight the loss
Dead inside
Into the nothing
Faded and weary
I won't leave and let you fall behind
Live for the dying
Heaven hear me
I know we can make it out alive
Leave me at the bottom
I am lost forever
Letters from the dead
Say goodbye
Sorrow falls upon us
This will be the last time
Days begin to end
But I'll get by
Follow the hopeless
And shut your eyes
All will be abandoned
None will shine
Gather the broken and leave this life
Lying in the earth
Side by side
Into the nothing
Faded and weary
I won't leave and let him fall behind
Live for the dying
Heaven hear me
I know we can make it out alive
I'll keep you inside
Where I lead you cannot follow
Straight into the light
As my breath grows still and shallow
Into the nothing
Faded and weary
I won't leave and let them fall behind
Live for the dying
Heaven hear me
I know we can make it out alive
Stay with me
You're all I have left
I know we can make it out alive
Stay with me
You're all I have left
I know we can make it out alive
I am frail and withered
Cover up the wounds
That I can't hide
Walls that lie between us
The saint within the sinner
I have lost the nerve
But it's all right
Carry the wounded and shut your eyes
All will be forgiven
None will rise
Bury the fallen and lead the blind
I will fight the loss
Dead inside
Faded and weary
I won't leave and let you fall behind
Live for the dying
Heaven hear me
I know we can make it out alive
I am lost forever
Letters from the dead
Say goodbye
Sorrow falls upon us
This will be the last time
Days begin to end
But I'll get by
Follow the hopeless
And shut your eyes
None will shine
Gather the broken and leave this life
Lying in the earth
Side by side
Faded and weary
I won't leave and let him fall behind
Live for the dying
Heaven hear me
I know we can make it out alive
Where I lead you cannot follow
Straight into the light
As my breath grows still and shallow
Faded and weary
I won't leave and let them fall behind
Live for the dying

I know we can make it out alive
Stay with me
You're all I have left

Before playing Into The Nothing in concert Ben said "I wanna take the time to dedicate this next song to all our brothers and sisters serving overseas" and "When I write songs I try to be cryptic about the lyrics. I try not to be too specific, but this song kinda catered itself to that and to anyone else who feels like they're going into the nothing."
I heard a similar intro when I saw them live, they also had clips of military on the screens on stage when really increased the effect of the song in my opinion.

Definitely one of my favorites on the new album. I'm not totally sure on the meaning, but it definitely rings of war... but who knows maybe it's about a relationship?
yeah to me it sounds more like a battle( personal) hes trying to over come, like a job or fighting between friends or a girlfriend hes having trouble with, but he knows that if they just give up on it they will fail so hes tryign to convince the people or person in this song to keep going because he knows it will work out
I think this is a song about two soldiers fighting on the battlefield. One friend is trying to help the other. They see others dying around them, but they have to keep going. They survive and make it home but one can’t take the weight of what they went through so one becomes suicidal. The lyricist tells them not to leave. He needs his friend to hang in there.
Screaming on the inside (Angry and in pain) I am frail and withered (His body is weak) Cover up the wounds (Basically make a makeshift patch to fix the wound) That I can't hide (It won’t hide the wound) Walls that lie between us (One of his comrades died) The saint within the sinner (He was a good guy but war made him kill) I have lost the nerve (He struggles to keep it together) But it's all right ( he can go on) Carry the wounded and shut your eyes (You try to save your friend and close your eyes to the shots around you) All will be forgiven (Fighting for your country is a justified act) None will rise (Those who are gone can’t return) Bury the fallen and lead the blind (He’s saying you have to keep going. You can place the dead behind you because you have those that are alive that need you) I will fight the loss (It’ll always be an internal struggle, losing and seeing your comrades die one by one) Dead inside (You have to numb those feelings)
Into the nothing (Even if it kills him) Faded and weary (Tired and worn) I won't leave and let you fall behind (He won’t let his friend die) Live for the dying (He has to live for those who lost their lives) Heaven hear me (He’s saying a prayer while fighting through it) I know we can make it out alive (He knows he can pull through with his friend and he’ll do what he can to make sure they both live through it)
Leave me at the bottom (He starts to feel the internal pain of what’s happened) I am lost forever (He’s a changed person and won’t be the same because of the things he’s seen) Letters from the dead (Soldiers that wrote home) Say goodbye (It might be the end) Sorrow falls upon us (They begin to feel the weight of the situation) This will be the last time (repeating it might be over for them) Days begin to end (The war is over) But I'll get by (He has to keep going on with his life) Follow the hopeless (Just like many soldiers who return home, there might be a sense of hopelessness) And shut your eyes (He’s saying it’s over now so close your eyes)
All will be abandoned None will shine Gather the broken and leave this life (Sometimes soldiers become suicidal after great loss) Lying in the earth Side by side (soldiers at the cemetery)
Into the nothing Faded and weary I won't leave and let you fall behind (He’s saying he won’t let his friend go through with the suicide) Live for the dying (You have to live for all those who lost their own life) Heaven hear me (He’s saying a prayer) I know we can make it out alive (He knows they can eventually recover)
I'll keep you inside (In his heart) Where I lead you cannot follow (I think this is the other person saying they want to die) Straight into the light (Heaven) As my breath grows still and shallow (Dying)
Into the nothing Faded and weary I won't leave and let them fall behind Live for the dying Heaven hear me I know we can make it out alive
Stay with me (He’s telling the suicidal soldier to stay with him) You're all I have left (They made it out alive together and he needs his friend to hang in there) I know we can make it out alive (He knows things will get better in life) Stay with me (Don’t leave. Stay alive) You're all I have left I know we can make it out alive I’m a military veteran, so maybe that’s why I read the lyrics this way.
For some reason when I hear this song I think about the picture of the dying marine in Afghanistan that received so much press a couple months ago. It seems to me that this song is almost like a conversation between the wounded and his comrade holding him in those last minutes.
anthem of the angels describes benjamin's pain for losing that dying person then in lights out i think it's a struggle inside his mind...he's trying to numb himself "I can't afford to care" Dear agony talks about benjamin begging pain to leave him... Into the nothing (he dedicates this song to soldiers) but he mentioned that it is for all those who feel they're going into nothing and i believe it serves the sequence as if his mind is too tired and he's actually losing it in without you he wants his feelings, mind and agony back for he realizes he can't face the dark (problems and life in general) without them
Not Many people know, but ben is a crazy gamer. he have some favorite war games like call of duty. He uses those games, and movies i suppose for inspriration when he writes songs like this. x3 i think its awesome.
For whatever reason, when I first got Dear Agony, a few days before it was officially released, I completely neglected to listen to this particular song. I've no idea whatever why I chose to do this, as I recall listening to the preview of the song on Amazon, and liking it. But I did. Today, I was quite bored, and decided to listen to this track for no other reason than that it was the only track I had not really looked at on the album. That was an hour ago. I have been listening to it for almost an hour straight since then, save for a few minutes when I tried looking up a live performance on Youtube, to see if it sounded as good live as it did in studio. It started out fine. Then, Ben started singing, and a part of me shrivelled up and died inside. I don't know why, but he just does not sound good at all live, and that performance temporarily killed my liking for the song. However, I've no doubt that in a few hours, I will begin to like it again, for it truly is quite a masterpiece, if you just don't think about the fact that the singer sounds like a cawing chicken in the live version.
Yeah..This song is about the troops. Faded and weary..into the nothing..
Live for the dying, heaven hear me.
Live on for the people that died for our freedom.
Amazing song.
Firstly I think some of these lyrics are wrong. "I will fight the loss" should be "I will find the lost" Also why do the 2nd and 3rd choruses change "leave and let YOU fall behind", it stays You the entire time, not him or them.
As for the meaning, it's very confusing because at first glance the song seems to contradict itself, talking about following him and making it through alright, then talking about everyone being abandoned and "lying in the earth side by side", or dying. Really both of those are right.
Anyways here is my really long but awesome and emotional interpretation of the song.
I think it's about a soldier, his fellow troops, and the girl he left behind...
"Screaming on the inside I am frail and withered"
Basically he's in a fierce battle and he's sick, tired, and wounded. The reason the screams are on the inside is because soldiers still have to be tough on the outside and keep it together.
"Cover up the wounds That I can't hide"
A Paradox, if he can't hide the wounds, how does he cover them? But I think this has to do with hiding his pain and hurt to give himself, and the rest of his men, hope of getting in through it. He's lying to himself, telling himself that he's ok.
"Walls that lie between us The saint within the sinner"
Double meaning for both lines. Literally he's far away in a battle, the walls of space and time lie between them. Mentally he's a "sinner" and most likely she's the "saint". Also, as later in the song you find out, through the intense battle, the soldier has redeemed himself and though he's a sinner, through his honorable courage he has become a saint in the end.
"I have lost the nerve But it's all right"
Unsure about this. Probably back to the battle and he's losing it, but it's ok because no one has it together.
"Carry the wounded and shut your eyes All will be forgiven None will rise"
First you need to know that the battle has taken a turn for the worst. The soldier's troop has been ambushed and they are seriously outnumbered.
Looking at the 2nd line, the soldier becomes a "saint" by acting valiantly and doing what the 1st line says. He helps his wounded comrades and loses his past sin. He tells them to shut their eyes though sort of like you would "not look down" or "don't look back". "None will rise" though because they are ambushed and will most likely all die.
"Bury the fallen and lead the blind I will find the lost Dead inside"
The 1st line here is not literal. The fallen are the men that have already died, "bury" simply means remember them and pay your respects, since their in a battle they can't actually bury them. The blind however are the ones perhaps still in shock or those who are wounded, he's once again being courageous and telling his men to lead them. Personally he says he "I will find the lost, dead inside" which are the ones that have given up hope and need to be rallied by a leader, the singer.
"Into the nothing Faded and weary I won't leave and let you fall behind Live for the dying Heaven hear me I know we can make it out alive"
Their ambushed and face bad odds, thus they are going "Into the NOTHING" having no idea what lies ahead of them. They are tired from the previous fighting but the singer says he won't let his men fall behind. He tells his men to live for those who died, he's rallying them and giving them a cause. He cries out to heaven for help, and tells his mean they can make it out, he gives them hope.
"Leave me at the bottom I am lost forever"
It sounds like the leader is giving up hope but I think he's saying he will "go down with the ship" and die so that the rest of his men can make it.
"Letters from the dead Say goodbye"
Once again giving his mean hope, the dead are saying goodbye to them because when they ambush started they thought they would meet the dead, but now the dead say by because they will live and not end up meeting them.
"Sorrow falls upon us This will be the last time"
Sorrow because they realize they will all die and no longer have hope. It's last time because soon they will be killed.
"Days begin to end But I'll get by"
The fight is near ending, he says he'll get by but he doesn't mean literally and physically, instead he means that their spirit will live as they will fight to the death, read on...
"Follow the hopeless And shut your eyes"
He knows they will die now so there's no more reason to give them false hope. He still tells them to shut there eyes though, instead of staring at death better to let it come quickly and quietly.
"All will be abandoned None will shine"
Once again, they will all die and be left alone. No one will shine because no one will live. Note that they haven't died yet, this is future tense.
"Gather the broken and leave this life Lying in the earth Side by side"
Not sure about gathering the broken but obviously he's saying that they will die but will go down together fighting to the end.
CHORUS Same meaning, fight to the death and rally behind him.
"I'll keep you inside Where I lead you cannot follow"
Finally we get to his girl. He'll love her to the end and thus he'll "keep you inside". He knows he's going to die though so he tells her she can't follow him.
"Straight into the light As my breath grows still and shallow"
Into the light is where he's going, heaven. Self explanatory for the rest of it, as he dies he loses his breath.
CHORUS
"Stay with me You're all I have left I know we can make it out alive"
Though he gave up hope previously and they all know they will die, this is perhaps their last act and so he tries to get them to go down fighting. Stay with me may also refer to his girl. Though she has no idea what's going on, since he's close to death, he's thinking of her and what she would be thinking of if she saw him sacrificing himself. He asks her to still love him even though he's going to die, he tells her she's all she has left. Then "we" refers to their love, since he's probably not really going to make it he knows that they can at least love eachother til the death.
