This song is so beautiful, it makes me want to cry. I wish everybody knew about this band.
Anyway, I just think that this song is about human being's tendency to try to explain things. I think in this song he is referring to the inaccuracies in the Bible.
The first verse I think refers to the Bible being written and how today, things are interpreted so much differently.
The chorus is the singer's doubt about the truth of the Bible. He thinks that it has done the world more harm than good.

This i think means that we as humans have thought up what God wants and are pleased with ourselves when we do what we think He wants.

i don't think he is saying that he is doubting the Bible itself, just the interpretations of it. people get really proud of some of their theologies, even when they're false. and by saying a verse means something that it doesn't, we're putting our own words in God's mouth, when His words should be in our mouths. i think he is also saying that in trying to be right, we make those who don't agree with us stop believing altogether. a lot of people who aren't believers take the words of others as God's will and His thoughts when they are...

God also says to have the faith of a child, and in "the aftermath is...the broken bones of our childhood" i think is saying that we make everthing so complicated and so much of a trying-to-make-it-logical thing, we lose the relational aspect of God and make it all about the knowledge about Him.
I agree, this song is beautiful.
I think we can interpret this song generally, it doesn't have to refer to theology or the Bible. It's basically about human pride, in regards to people's words. It's about how people like to judge, play God, and express it with their words (thus putting "words inside God's mouth"). We get so proud over our theories and judgments, we don't realize we're actually not as right as we think we are. In the process, we hurt others, and in the end, we'll realize we're just hurting ourselves, losing so much more than we've ever won..all because of our pride. I think the song is called Unmade to inspire us to "unmake" ourselves, to strip ourselves off our pride, humble ourselves, and return to what we were supposed to be.
This song describes how a friendship of mine played out almost perfectly. But I think it's kind of applicable in many situations where things fall apart because of our imperfection in relating to one another.
"When we were young our words were innocent; whiter than slow, awkward and slow" this was the beginning of our friendship. Kinda awkward, but innocent and fun and not cluttered with drama and emotions and just human mess.
"Now when we speak; we risk an avalanch; but that's not enough now to reroute our plans" this was what started happening. Him and I would say things to each other, not even intending to hurt. But the words would hit issues and past hurts that started an avalanch of words that should never have been said on either part.
"In our words we lost so much more than we ever won" Something I learned when he pushed me away entirely was how much I lost by saying things in trying to win his heart.

The fences that had once provided healthy relational boundaries were gone. Broken when they were breached by words of defense. The need for defending was the "broken bones" of the past. The things that had hurt us and cause insecurities and brokeness.
