Sputter (feat. Andrew McMahon) Lyrics
Wake up, try on your new disguise
Would they recognize you anyway?
Would they?
Dead leaves lie down beneath your feet
As you step into the street
Notice the distance between hearts and homes
But still, you know
It's all right
You're not looking back this time.
You know, it's all right
You're stepping on the cracks and you feel fine.
Don't waste your breath
You wouldn't want this anyway
If you did, I think I'd let you
Talk this to death
Or in circles like we're aeroplanes
When all along I knew that we would sputter out
We would sputter...
Outside, construction workers pour
A brand new basement floor
But then the ground starts shaking
Fault lines to your own front door
I looked at this and thought of you
And all that is and isn't true.
And with the strength left in me,
Walked on while the walls came down
It's all right
You're not looking back this time.
You know, it's all right
I'm stepping on the cracks and I feel fine.
Don't waste your breath
You wouldn't want this anyway
If you did, I think I'd let you
Talk this to death
Or in circles like we're aeroplanes
When all along I knew that we would sputter out
We would sputter... (sputter...)
We would sputter... (sputter...)
We would sputter... (sputter...) out
We would sputter out
Don't waste your breath
You wouldn't want this anyway
'Cause if you did, I think I'd let you
Talk this to death
Let's circle like we're aeroplanes
When all along I knew that we would sputter out (We would sputter...)

Love this song. Where does Andrew come in? I can't hear him.
Andrew played the piano in this song and arranged most of it :)

Otherwise, as far as the meaning goes, I think it's pretty straight forward.

It actually seems like Andrew does sing in the song. Listen during the chorus, there's another voice. It's pretty quiet though.

Any song with Andrew McMahon in it is AMAZING!!!!!
I think the piano and some 'sputter's towards the end are all andrew.
Haha, the first verse was what Pete Wentz had on his envelope when he wore that gold mask.
i think this song is about something bad happening in a relationship or something and moving on with it and being okay.
"Outside, construction workers pour A brand new basement floor But then the ground starts shaking Fault lines to your own front door"
i think this is one of the most beautiful lyrics william has ever written. i feel like it's saying how you're trying to build a new foundation and start over, but something happens and you're just cracking all over again.
