You were the only face I'd ever known.
I was the light from the lamp on the floor,
And only as bright as you wanted me to be.
But, I am no gentleman, I can be a prick,
And I do regret more than I admit.
You have been followed back to the same place I sat with you drink for drink.
Take the pain out of love and then love won't exist.

Everything we had, everything we had,
Everything we had, everything we had is no longer there.

It was the only place I'd never known.
Turned off the light on my way out the door.
I will be watching wherever you go,
Through the eyes of a fly on the wall.
You have been followed back to the same place I sat with you drink for drink.
Take the pain out of love and then love won't exist.

Everything we had, everything we had,
Everything we had, everything we had is no longer there, longer there.

You saw for yourself, the way it played out.
For you, I am blinded.
For you, I am blinded, for you.

I am no gentleman, I can be a prick.
And I do regret more than I admit.
You have been followed back to the same place I sat with you drink for drink.
Take the pain out of love and then love won't exists.

Everything we had, everything we had,
Everything we had, everything we had.
Everything we had, everything we had,
Everything we had

I'll be with you wherever you go,
Through the eyes of a fly on the wall.

I can't believe no one has commented on this song. I think it's the best on Santi, lyrics wise. It's basically about admitting your mistakes and flaws, but realizing you had something really good and would do anything to have it back.

I agree, I really like this song, especially the bit where he sings "I am no gentleman, I can be a prick, and I do regret more than I admit." I think the song's about a guy, who did something foolish and hence finds himself alone. Only, because he only cared deeply for one girl he finds himself following her - either because he wants her back, or because he just wants to make sure she is always safe and happy.

Yeah, basically what you guys have said. He's missing "everything he had" with a girl and just wants it back.

I was at the cd release show last night in Chicago... This song was dedicated to one of thier close friends that had passed away. I think that it makes more sense on losing a friend than it has to with a relationship.

it does actually make more sense for the loss of a friend. but the part, "I am no gentleman I can be a prick" makes me think of like relationships.

God this song is incredible. It might just be the best song he's ever written. And the acoustic version is even better. Magic.

This song is so beautiful... the first time i heard it, i just wanted to start crying. I love it. But the first 15 seconds or so of it reminds me of Yellowcard - How I Go =/

I definitely agree that, lyrically, this is the best song on Santi, and in my opinion, the best song on the album in every regard. But I also think the song works just as well in memory of a friend as it does for relationships. I can relate to it in terms of a relationship, which is one of the reasons I love this song so much. It genuinely touches on the remorse you feel when something you've done ends a serious romance with someone you honestly love.

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
Per the FAQ on Keane's website, Keane's drummer Richard Hughes, stated the following: "We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..." With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."

Zombie
Cranberries, The
"Zombie" is about the ethno-political conflict in Ireland. This is obvious if you know anything of the singer (Dolores O'Riordan)'s Irish heritage and understood the "1916" Easter Rising reference. "Another head hangs lowly Child is slowly taken And the violence caused such silence Who are we mistaken - Another mother's breaking Heart is taking over" Laments the Warrington bomb attacks in which two children were fatally injured on March 23rd, 1993. Twelve year old Tim Parry was taken off life support with permission from his mother after five days in the hospital, virtually braindead. "But you see it's not me It's not my family" References how people who are not directly involved with the violence feel about it. They are "zombies" without sympathy who refuse to take action while others suffer.

Of Mice & Men
This track is about is about questioning why the sky would choose to be blue if it had the choice to be anything else, “blue also meaning sad,” states frontman Aaron Pauley. “It's about comforting a loved one in a time of loss by telling them you feel blue, too.”

Shudder to Think
This song is timeless, and nearly 20 years after its creation, still possesses the mystique it did the first time i heard it ~1994. To me, at first blush, all those years ago, it had some kind of homo-erotic allure. The line "so that the others may do" tells of something which must be done for others to follow suit. It felt like like some kind of roxy-glam-pop invitation to sexual liberation. Upon further introspection I think the song may not have an intrinsic meaning, but simply represents a sort of "holding open the door" for people who otherwise might be affronted by this song/band's unusual style. I know, as a sort of armchair rock-historian, that there have been few bands so daring and so true to the sound that wanted to emerge from within, whether the creator wanted it or not. This band handled it with elegance and grace seldom, if ever, seen.
