Look like a girl but I think like a guy
Not ladylike to behave like a slime
Easy to be sleazy when you've got a filthy mind
You stick to your yogurts
I'll stick to my apple pie

Girls are not meant to fight dirty
Never look a day past thirty
Not gonna bend over and curtsy for you

Is there any possibility
You'll quit gossiping about me
To hide your insecurities?
All you say is "blah, blah"

Girls they never befriend me
'Cause I fall asleep when they speak
Of all the calories they eat
All they say is
Na na na na na
Na na na na na

Girls, oh girls, wag your tails to the beat
Of girls aloud, oh the journos in heat
Write such good stories
Oh their mothers must be proud
Making money off your insecurity and doubt

Girls are not meant to fight dirty
Never look a day past thirty
Not gonna bend over and curtsy for you

Is there any possibility
You'll quit gossiping about me
To hide your insecurities?
All you say is "blah, blah"

Girls they never befriend me
'Cause I fall asleep when they speak
Of all the calories they eat
All they say is
Na na na na na
Na na na na na
All they say is
Na na na na na
Na na na na na

I feel I've been riding in a fast car
Burning dirty gas won't get you that far
I feel I've been riding up the wrong path
But I'm gonna make sure I get the last laugh

Is there any possibility
You'll quit gossiping about me
To hide your insecurities?
All you say is "blah, blah"

Girls they never befriend me
'Cause I fall asleep when they speak
Of all the calories they eat
All they say is
Na na na na na
Na na na na na
All they say is
Na na na na na
Na na na na na

Girls, wag your tails to the beat (na na na na na)...

Love it. A social commentary about how some males view females. I'm pretty sure Marina is a feminist? Someone can correct me on this if I'm wrong.

This to me, is making a comment about how a woman's role in society is to be 'soft' 'attractive' and 'well mannered'. If you are not those things, you are not perceived as a 'lady'. This all relates back to living in a patriarchal society (a society controlled by what suits heterosexual men the best). Why can't females be strong? - because it threatens a man's role in society. Males are supposed to be the physically strong ones.

"Girls are not meant to fight dirty Never look a day past thirty"

    • Females are expected to look beautiful all the time (make up anyone?) but this same pressure isn't forced upon men. Now that's a bit unfair isn't it??

"Not gonna bend over and curtsey for you"

    • This to me, is stating that she is not going to give in to society's expectations of what a female is meant to be like.

"Girls they never hear from me Because I fall asleep when they speak Of all the calories they eat All they say is "na na na na na"

    • It's important to listen to what anyone has to say, female OR male. If you lend anyone an ear, you'll find that it gets you further than being ignorant and unattentive. It's also funny how some men DO complain about women talking so much about their weight issues, when in reality, some MEN are the ones who have contributed to this same problem. If men made women feel like they didn't have to be beautiful all the time (which is a ridiculous expectation), then maybe some women wouldn't have to talk so much about their weight issues and insecurities. Regardless, if someone doesn't want to give you the time of day, to hear what you have to say, they are not worth it.

I could analyse this song forever but basically it's a message to girls out there, that you can be however you like or whoever you want. Don't let society's expectations of what it is to be a 'lady' cripple your aspirations and dreams. If you want to drive big trucks like men do, do it. If you want to be physically strong, do it. Strive to make yourself happy before you worry about making someone else happy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Marina is a genius. I've been waiting for a long time for a pop artist to come out with songs that are easy on the ears (to be more accessible for the masses) and to have meaningful messages in said songs. Alternative and more obscure artists with meaningful messages in their songs are less accessible (which is unfortunate but a reality), so I knew that only through pop music, would you be able to reach a wider audience and an audience that actually needs this type of positive influence. Because it's that same audience who are looking up to people like Paris Hilton, have a distorted perception of beauty and seem to value physical appearance more than personality. I just hope that the masses do latch onto Marina as they would with most other pop artists. The world needs this.

I think it IS a feminist anthem, because she's imploring women to stop judging each other and being enemies amongst themselves.

I interpreted this song as the artist talking about the unreasonable expectations that society place upon girls but also about how girls bring each other down.

"Is there any possibility You'll quit gossiping about me? To hide your insecurities All you say is blah, blah"

It sort of infers that she was put down by girls who probably were made to feel really insecure about themselves. These insecurities are in turn born from the expectations placed upon girls and societies' unrealistic idea of beauty.

For christ sake, I just wrote two comments trying to express the same thing but they both came out deleted because of technical difficults. I actually think it is feminist, but it's not based on politics but just personal stance. i think the bit about not bending over to curtsy is kind of meant to be universally heard on some level as being empowerment to women as a whole, not falling into these size zero dreams, creating body image and also judgement of other girls for this becomes a mass view not only of them as an individual but of all women and even with the reference to magazines etc i think that's more of an ironic jibe about taking personal responsibility as we are all exposed to the same thing really but we don't all pertain this idea that our actions don't matter as it has become the norm where clearly if they are damaging they do. i think marina as a singer, individul and artist is actually saying women need to stop this battle with women, because it's really a battle with themself. if i get over my insecurities and some woman then tries to put them back on me then it won't touch me because i'm over that but it really just perpetuates their own insecurities. I don't think it's supposed to get too serious into anything but in her song 'oh no' which is a personal favourite she says 'don't do friends', maybe this explains the not being able to relate to girls side and it's not to say all girls are like that but i think she is literally just saying that she won't let it affect her if she can help it and the fact that it is called girls and not women i think it is portraying the women who never grew out of the bitching stage and these women unfortunately do exist and if you come into contact with them it can be social suicide because we pathetically still have this hearsay dynamic where those who are popular will take heed and i think it's a fair point. maybe if we focused on our relationship with women and the woman inside every one of us we could relate and if that's never gunna happen just accept that wave length ain't gunna get you these sorts of friends which is cool because i've had them and they suck and they should be the ones listening to this. as far as marina herself goes she isn't singing about how great this mentality is so i'd stay she isn't one of the girls she's describing as they are the ones who can't see this shit about how hating, not even hating, but jealousy, envy, being threatened, scheming with people just isn't gunna get you anywhere and leave you more messed up and alone and she won't fall for it. also i don't even think it's about gender as guys can be like this too, i think we need to stop being so introspective after that hideously long ESSAY and just accept it's a catchy alternative pop song which is just saying had enough of this shit, that's it!

    My Interpretation

Marina has said in an interview that this song is social commentary. She doesn't neccesarily feel this way about girls but she sees alot of girl on girl hate around her. She said that she thinks it's unhealthy and girls should band together more. If you listen to different versions of the songs, you get a better idea of this. Lyrics like, "I love your botox bitch, I'll curtsey for you", "Girls, oh girls, buying cheap magazines; cut out the face and you cut out the dream", "Calm down I'm not gonna steal your boyfriend so quit burning holes in me with your eyes". I wish this was easier to see, it makes me sad that other commenters think this is just Marina hating on girls; dig a little deeper for the true meaning of the song, that's really how all Marina songs are.

    My Opinion

"I can't stand to hear a woman say she thinks likes a guy, or hates women because they're all catty. That's misogyny. The very fact that you, as a woman, think differently than how a socially-stereotyped woman is supposed to think is proof that our gender "norms" are fucking us over.

Women are not all alike. Some of us like football. Some of us like talking on the phone. Some of us like religion. Some of us are emotional. Some of us speak three languages. Some of us have boyfriends. Some of us have girlfriends. Some of us wear lipstick. Some of us don't shave our pits. Some of us have kids. Some of us worry that we'll drop our best friend's baby.

Now please stop claiming that you don't act like a woman. It doesn't make you a special snowflake, it makes you a perpetrator of misogyny."

I find it hard to feel that this song is feminist or even mocking. I personally feel that it just demonstrates how Marina feels towards the majority of her female counterparts. To call it a feminist anthem is a bit strange and to say that it's from a male's point of view is just absurd. I find it hard to interpret this song because it just seems so obvious to me. Females conform but they don't conform if you catch my drift. If not, girls conform to the norms and values within a society but not the type of norms and values that society expects them to. That's just my sociological mind, sorry if it confuses you.

Fortnight
Taylor Swift
The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
