Believe Lyrics

[V1]
I'm still trying to figure out how to tell you I was wrong
I can't fill the emptiness inside since you've been gone
So is it you or is it me?
I know I said things that I didn't mean
But you should've known me by now
You should've known me

[Chorus]
If you believed
When I said
I'd be better off without you
Then you never really knew me at all
If you believed
When I said
That I wouldn't be thinking about you
You thought you knew the truth but you're wrong
You're all that I need
Just tell me that you still believe

[V2]
I can't undo the things that led us to this place
But I know there's something more to us than our mistakes
So is it you or is it me
I know I'm so blind when we don't agree
But you should've known me by now

You should've known me
Cuz you're all that I want
Don't you even know me at all
You're all that I need
Just tell me that you still believe

What I love about this song is that it is written about something that happens often. I think everyone can relate to this and so many ways. We have all said things to someone that we really didn't mean. If we could we would we would take them back. But the damage is done. I think that this is generally what the song is about; regret and redemption

Ive listened to the song the most off the album

10/10

I kinda think of this song alot differently than what most people do. Its about a guy or girl who just had there partner break up with them or they just got into a fight. the guy or girl is singing to there partner saying im sorry this is my fault, when it says "then you never really knew me at all" there not saying it to be mean, there saying, this isn't who i am, i am a better person, i have not shown you who i really am. Please give me a second chance.

ratslab is right but i also think the song is saying that if we know the people who we are close to as well as we should that we should be able to tell when they say something that they do not mean and want to take back.

I think if you listen to the cd as a whole you will find that hes not talking about a person but God. he pretty much cursed God for his own stupity, not saying that John is stupid but ok lets say that the rumer to the meaning of Lucy is true and that he Was drunk and got into a car acident and his doughter died. I dont know if this true or not. but I think he cursed God for "leting his doughter die" when it would have been his fault. there for him crying out to God (Hero) then he feels like a monster (Monster)Dreaming about what could be (Dont awake me) and so on and so forth through the whole cd. So I think that Believe means he is sorry for curseing God

I like how you mentioned other songs in your interpretation... Lucy, Hero, Monster, and Don't Wake Me are all songs that could definitly be related in that way. They most likely are but I'm not exactly sure. Good point.

Well I think this is about God. I have walked away from Christ before, and before to long, I already knew I did something wrong. Though I still tried to make it on my own. But the only thing that I find that wouldn't connect to this type of situation is when he says "I can't fill the emptiness inside since you've been gone" and also where he says "But I know there's something more to us than our mistakes" note he says Our mistakes. So in a way I think this may be talking about someone else but God.

I have read before that he has a bad relationship with his father. I don't know much about the band, I have listened to them for a few years now. But I never tried to find out more about them, I even saw them in concert at atf 2008. But from the two statements I mentioned above I believe this song is about someone other then God. Could it be his father? Or someone else?

Anyway it is a great song, and the cd is amazing. Keep up the good work skillet. God be with us.

Rock on! Great post... I interpret this song two ways, and one does have to do with God. We all have had our doubts but the truth of the matter is that nobody can make it on their own. Also, I think he could be singing to a girl, yes Skillet is a Christian band but they do also sing songs about love... much like Relient K. Great song. I love to play it on my accoustic, definitly a different arrangement, but the same powerful message. God lives, love lives, long live both.

I love this song. I'm not really sure what the meaning is. It can be any of the ones above. I can see each and every meaning as being the right one.

Good point and I agree, but sometimes when you love someone, that makes you vunerable to anything you say... Somethings are often taken to heart when they should never have been said... But yes, I do agree with what you are saying.
