Bonfire Lyrics

A little early in spring, a bonfire ring

She's shivering alone

I bumped into you somehow

But you can wear

My duct-taped vest
It's a party best

It’s really all I own

Everything's changing now

And I am high like a star that's flying

Cassiopeia

Everything's changing now

She said it’s alright

She said no don't die alone
There's no goodbyes

Lightning comes and lightning goes

And it’s all the same to me
Let it in

Cuz I want you so

I can hardly breathe or release

Into one thousand pieces

I have broke into

Over you

The chain will soon be gone,

I keep burning on and on and on

If nothing else I am myself
That's all I have to give

Everything's changing now

Oh we could live like kings

If we take a risk

Or we could live in doubt

Everything's changing now
Oh now
Come on, come on

And lightning comes and lightning goes

And it’s all the same to me

Let it in

Cuz I want you so

I can hardly breathe or release

Into one thousand pieces

I have broke into

Over you

The chain will soon be gone,
And I keep burning on and on and on

And this, this is, this is the last time, it's the last time

And this, this is, this is your goodbye

And this, this is, this is the last time

And this, this is, this is your goodbye

Some girls will break you down

Just to see you come undone

Everything's changing now

Maybe you and I are cursed

Maybe you and I are one

And that's the universe

Around, around she drags you

Lightning comes and lightning goes

It’s all the same to me

Let it in

Cuz I want you so

I can hardly breathe or release

Into one thousand pieces

I have broke into

Over you

We'll snuff the flames at dawn,

I keep burning on and on and on
I really love you!

I took this from the lyrics on the CD- here is my interpretation...

A little early in spring A bonfire ring, she’s shivering alone I bumped into you somehow You can wear, my duct taped vest It’s my party best, it’s really all I own Everything’s changing now And I am high like a star that’s flying Cassiopeia Everything’s changing now She said it’s alright No, don’t die alone There’s no good byes Lightening comes and lightening goes And it’s all the same to me Let me in But then I want you so I can hardly breathe, or release Into one thousand pieces I have broken into, over you Night shade will soon be gone But I keep burning on If nothing else I am myself That’s all I have to give Everything’s changing now And we could live like kings if we take a risk Or we could live in doubt Everything’s changing now Some girls will break you down Just to see you come undone Everything’s changing now Maybe you and I are cursed Or maybe you and I are one And that’s the universe Spin around, keep changing

Spring is a metaphor for falling in love-even though it is early in their relationship; he has not fully let her into his world. Outside, she is still shivering- waiting. They reconnected serendipitously. He is offering to her what he can- at this point it something physical (the duct tape vest). He recognizes that she is on the outside, but cares for her and he wants to let her in-he is conflicted. He wants to take care of her- to keep her warm- as she makes him happy. He recognizes that things in life will always change. Things will always move forward and that as much as things start quickly, they can end quickly. He doesn’t want to put his heart out there and have it broken. She is beautiful to him (Cassiopeia)- stunning. He recognizes that she tells him that it will be alright. He hears her when she says that she doesn’t want him to live a lonely existence- she loves him and doesn’t want him to lonely or conflicted. There is a recognition that he doesn’t want to say good bye to her. Again, he realizes that this is something that may likely last longer than a flash of lightening. She has captured his heart. It all the same to him if he keeps her at a distance- he can’t get hurt that way. She wants him to let her in. He wants her so much that he can hardly breathe. Releasing and letting her in his world is a risk. If he does, there is an opportunity that he could break into a thousand pieces. His nights are lonely- this is when he thinks of her. But he will keep himself busy so that he won’t have to feel the pain. It’s easier for him. He tells her that he has nothing but his fractured heart/self to give her. He is himself and wants to be loved and accepted for him. Again, everything is changing for him. But in this realization, he thinks that if he just gave in and allowed her to see him, he has a potential for something that would be a love so wonderful. But, equally, he could continue to move forward and live his life as it is. He could live in doubt and not let her in. Again, he has been hurt- other girls have broken him. He doesn’t want to hurt and be exposed and come undone to feel the pain he has experienced before. He says that he thinks that they could be cursed because he might never changed, but again recognizes that he could be one with her. He loves her. He recognizes that this person, this relationship, could be never ending- a level of happiness that could be dizzying..things will always change but the love could be worth it.

eobrien ~ I think you nailed it.

I believe the third line is actually "I bumped and I knew somehow". Go give it a listen.

I also believe this song is about his first love. I have a theory that Bonfire, Thanks a Lot, Anything, 10 Days Late, Never Let You Go, Deep Inside of You, Another Life, The Background, Faster, Crystal Baller, Wake for Young Souls, God of Wine, and Blinded are all about the same woman, someone whose soul held hands with his for a while and for whom he still feels a great deal. I think he loved her through lots, that she had an odd childhood, maybe some mental illness and a couple addictions. this may be a reach, but I think she severed ties to protect him from herself and he wasn't altogether comfortable with that. I think they've seen each other a few times since and that each of those moments overflowed in him and songs were how he expressed something he wanted to nail down so badly. I think Stephan is bi-polar and when manic is inspired, feels omnipotent, and is on fire sexually. I'm certain he thinks of sex in terms of deep spiritual connection, and that every encounter he's had has not been without real meaning.

I'd like to think this song in particular describes his first meeting with the aforementioned lover, the one who meant most, the one who carried his child for a short time. Stephan, if you ever browse this kind of thing, you are strong and an inspiration. you make this world more real and more beautiful for a single mom who knows what love can be. (also sorry if I'm entirely wrong about the whole thing, lol.)

I like it better than the "campfire" demo that leaked... it's raw and he sounds better.

what does "lightning comes and lightning goes" mean?

Cover art for Bonfire lyrics by Third Eye Blind

This is the best song I've heard on the album so far - I just bought the album and am listening to it right now.

"lightning comes and lightning goes" - I think it just means that things come and things go; everything changes, nothing is permanent.

As for the rest of the song, I really have no idea.

jlawson, you're sort of right but you forgot about the next line.

"And lightning comes and lightning goes
And it's all the same to me"

Lightning appears almost as quickly as it disappears, and it just happens in a quick flash, which is why it's "all the same to me". Some things leave or change as soon as you realize they're there.

but you have to listen to the song also,

He is burning, i think it is a song about being completly pissed off about something that this girl did, and i think Stephen is saying i dont care about anything else -"Im really F** pissed at this girl."

And yea i agree with what lixth says too

Cover art for Bonfire lyrics by Third Eye Blind

I think the song is about a girl who has screwed him over some how and even though he loves her he can't be with her.

I just wish these were the right lyrics..

A little early in Spring for a bonfire ring She's shivering alone. I bumped into you somehow. the lyrics posted are from the demo version before the album dropped

Not Valid

I hear "I really love you" in the background vocals (as originally posted)... maybe it's a different version.

Not Valid

@girafferz @hum yeahat the very end someone says 'i really love you' in between the 'did you get what you wanted'

Cover art for Bonfire lyrics by Third Eye Blind

It almost seems to me that he bumped into an old flame, and maybe they tried again, but he realized or they realized things were the same as they were before.

Cover art for Bonfire lyrics by Third Eye Blind

Ya I agree with him running into an old flame and it never working. The Cassiopeia line to me proves how shes to into herself and it will never work. "The Queen Cassiopeia, wife of King Cepheus of the mythological realm of Ethiopia, was beautiful but also arrogant and vain; these latter two characteristics led to her downfall." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassiopeia_(mythology)
