When something’s dark let me shed a little light on it
When something’s cold let me put a little fire on it
If something’s old I wanna put a bit of shine on it
When something’s gone I wanna fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
When something’s broke I wanna put a bit of fixin on it
When something’s bored I wanna put a little excited on it
If something’s low I wanna put a little high on it
When something’s lost I wanna fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
When signals cross I wanna put a little straight on it
If there’s no love I want to try to love again
I’ll say your prayers I’ll take your side
I'll burn as a way to make light
I'll dig your grave
We'll dance and sing
What's saved could be
One last lifetime
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
When something’s cold let me put a little fire on it
If something’s old I wanna put a bit of shine on it

This song has a lot of possibilities. The meaning I get is that it's about someone who really loves someone and will do anything to make their life a little better. My wife has bipolar disorder and I see/hear myself saying or doing these things to "fix" whatever is causing the current episode. I fight for her, and with her, to get her back to center again.
DUDE..holyfuckingshit, im sorry for the cursing but my bipolar gf just broke up with me....this song crushes me, but makes me realize I want to and will do anything to get her back

I think this song is definitely riding on a wave of optimism, in contrast to their previous lead-off single "World Wide Suicide" which was pure dissatisfaction from Eddie of the government at the time. I think the idea of a new beginning after Bush left has inspired Eddie to write more uplifting material, and this single is a good example of that. I think this song is a celebration of sorts, with the protagonist rejoicing over his new-found attitude for life. What once was lost - be it love or happiness - is found again.
Great song.
yeah, I totally agree with you, tcaporale. This song is clearly very optimistic, and I think it has to do with the hope Obama is offering to the United States... maybe he sees a better future for his daughter. Musically speaking the song is very similar to what they had been doing in the avocado album, now with a sound much cleaner and with keyboards very marked.

I don't get the hatred for this song, and album, from people like stpfan22. Honestly I'm sorry I share the Pearl Jam... and Stone Temple Pilots for that matter... fanbase with assholes like you. This isn't selling out, it's evolving musically. It's not a pop song. The whole album is very alternative, very modern hard rock. It's like Foo Fighters... but (no disrespect to the Foos, great band) better. It's jumpy and happy and punky. If you don't like it, get the fuck out :D
Backspacer is IMO a very strong album.
Great song, i can't wait for the new album.
This songs pretty obvious, which is simply saying anything bad i will make better. Could be a love song, or about family, people, etc.

Great song, by a great band.
The lyric show signs of optimism, which may seem strange (Eddie tends to mostly right about sad, or horrific events). However, the lyrics still still show that the "character" is fighting for one's self, and standing up for its beliefs and/or material items and rights.
Just throwing this out there: maybe "The Fixer" is refering to Obama? The band did support him.. (and they're know for their political songs)
The whole vibe of optimism kind of makes sense until you reach the lines:
"I'll burn as a way to make light I'll dig your grave..."
Why would you burn to make light? It seems like this part of the song shows the extreme parts of being "the fixer" - when you try to fix everything to the point where you start going insane or maybe because it shows signs of some kind of neurotic attachment? I wonder if this has to do with the Obama administration at all too...not sure
Isn't it just saying the extremes he'd go to for this person?

It's a terribly romantic notion supposedly.
