On The Cross Lyrics
"We kill the fagots, we kill the lesbians,
I said goddammit we kill them all!"
We were taught to kneel and bow our heads.
I tried simply standing up instead.
Heard rumors of transparent legs
And walks for days and days.
These days we reach for so much more
We reached the point where we can't go home.
Alone we wait here underground
Amidst the others waiting
So pray, then, if it makes you feel safe.
But all I can is we go our own way.
We go our own way.
So save us.
Who would guess you were the chosen one?
The right place, you were the firstborn son.
Once questioned stable state of mind
To spend some time in the gutter.
A full collapse and caving in
Just wait for faith to kick in
I lost track of time as i stood in line
Amidst the other believers.
So pray then, if it makes you feel safe
All I can say is we go are own way
So pray then, if it makes you feel safe
All I can say is we go are own way
We go are own way
So save us
Over and over and I still can not believe
We can't save ourselves
Give me a chance up on the cross and watch me bleed.
Now ask for help
Having faith in something you can't see
Takes something else
Over and over and i still can not believe
We can save ourselves
So pray that if it makes you feel safe
All I can say is we go are own way
So pray then, if it makes you feel safe
All I can say is we go are own way
Send your prayers our way
To save us
Kill 'em again cuz they didn't die hard enough
I said goddammit we kill them all!"
I tried simply standing up instead.

And walks for days and days.

Its about people doing nothing while ONE dies for THEIR sins.
It's a questioning of things...its calling people out.....How do you go and let someone die like that and do nothing? Right.
We all have free will.
That is a gift.
You have people like the mormons that come to your door to save you. Why save ME? SAVE YOURSELF! You want to save me?
Get it?
This person even goes so far as to exchange places with this "person" on the cross...and say...Hey!...Watch me bleed and not ask for help.
If I did ask for help, would you?... Would you have helped?
Its about a bunch of bitches that don't deserve what they have because they don't and didn't recognize it when they had it.
Now its time for us to save ourselves. You can only ask so much of one man.
Forgiveness should be enough. Its not a continually clock out and check out to use to get yourself off the hook for your bullshit.
God's people are so Loving....yet not.
He walks in all of us.
Save Yourself.
@luckymag interesting interpretation I think elements of your interpretation are covered in others interpretations ... and pretty much the theme seems to be make yourself (or in your word "save yourself")

To me he sounds more of the Agnostic belief than Athiest. Saying like he believes in God but also thinks there are other ways and morals to believe in basically saying he doesn't think God is the only way. Ya know what I mean?

"You were guessed you were the chosen one." That makes no sense. I'm half-asleep. I have no clue what the fuck he says there.
@BryanMac maybe having an over inflated opinion of one self ... or about believing you are doing God's work (literally)

Second-guessing faith.

This song must be about how religion is just not right for some people, and that he rather see the rational side of things instead of blindly believing. Also, maybe how messed up it was for Bert to be a Jehovah's Witness (he was raised that way) and how unfitting this was for him, so he had to find his own truth of things.
Actually he was Mormon.... he was raised in Utah... and went to my high school. His father has had a hard time with him leaving the Mormon church but if you listen to the song it doesnt seem to be about a certain religion about all religion in general. I know his dad has had a really hard time with him leaving the religion so that relationship may be part of it. If you look at the lyrics of some of their first albums they talk about this but not as directly.

In "taste of ink" bert sings. "Each day gets more and more like the last day Still I can see it coming While I'm standing in the river drowning This could be my chance to break out This could be my chance to say goodbye At last it's finally over Couldn't take this town much longer Being half dead wasn't what I planned to be Now I'm ready to be free"
Breaking away from the religion and town, and now this song, looking back.
oh and also the clip in the beginning of the song is from Khalid Muhammad, an extremist Muslim from Texas.... not even a christian, reinforcing the idea that this song is about all religion.

Oh god, I love this song. This reflects my views on religion perfectly. So pray then, if it makes you feel safe / But all I can say, is we go our own way It's like Bert's saying, "go ahead and believe, but I don't any more. It's fine for you to believe what you believe in, but don't shove it all on me and try to make me believe it too." He's not being a hypocrite and trying to force believers into being Atheists. He doesn't think he's better than religion, it's just not for him. (MY LOVE FOR THIS SONG CAN NOT BE CONDENSED INTO A SINGLE COMMENT!)
failkid had a good point:
i agree, but i want to add that i think that it's talking about those who fallback on faith when something goes wrong.
Corrections in one of the verses * Listen carefully and you may hear, like I do, this:
Would guess you wereN'T the chosen one. The right place, you wereN'T the firstborn son. Once questioned stable state of mind To spend some time in the gutter.
All I did is change the 'were's to 'weren't'
