It's like Bert's saying, "go ahead and believe, but I don't any more. It's fine for you to believe what you believe in, but don't shove it all on me and try to make me believe it too."
He's not being a hypocrite and trying to force believers into being Atheists. He doesn't think he's better than religion, it's just not for him.
