Existence Lyrics

This hollow feeling, the knowledge that you exist amidst your insecurities.
Cover up to only coward out and never shutting up only to never speak aloud.
Have you dried up entirely. The walls of a church don't make it holy.
It's what's authentic that completes the sum of it's parts.
Don't excuse yourself from life today on the pretense of your past.
You're hurt you're broken, that's alright. This might be what it takes to wake you up.
Are you at your wits end yet? The walls of a church don't make it holy.
Security isn't glitzy or glamorous, concrete or cohesive there in lies the truth.
Lift your head up high. It's what we know we aren't that makes us who we are.
You're hurt you're broken, that's alright. That makes us who we are.

This may be a bit of a stretch, but it kind of seems like this is talking about how much closer you are to God when you've lost everything, and how having nothing and being hurt and broken ususally causes you to grow closer to God.

great interpretation! As a follower of Jesus Christ, the time of brokenness is a humbling experience as well as a growing experience. When we are at our lowest, we reach for God the most. We we have lost everything, we want to gain Christ's love more than any other time. When we are nothing, He is our everything.

Can anyone explain to me what he means by "It's what we know we aren't that makes us who we are?" I know it means something deep i just can't put my finger on it.

To me, it means we know we'll never match God's standard of perfection. We are sinners, we'll never be anywhere near worthy of heaven.

Lyrics from Redemption kinda relate to that. "I am just a man with a heart and sinful hands"

Or simply a process of elimination thing.

I'm pretty sure that's referring to believers in Christ. We know that we, as humans, cannot do a lot of things. We know we are imperfect, sinful, and in need of the Father's help and the salvation of Jesus. We know we aren't anything like God. We don't know everything, can't be everywhere, and are very far from perfectly loving like the Lord. When we acknowledge that, put ourselves in a place of surrender, and let the Holy Spirit guide us to be more like Jesus, that makes us who we are as believers.

In my opinion, that's really encouraging,...

I think it's like the things you stand for and more importantly the things you stand against shape the kind of person you are.

My personal take on line "Your hurt, your broken. That's alright. This might be what it takes to wake you up" can be applied in life. What those words meant to me was almost like a 'what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger' type of thing. Also sometimes people are so wrapped up in a personal frame of mind that leads to negativity, and when something life changing happens to leave them "Hurt and broken" they start seeing things with a new perspective. "It makes us who we are" meaning everything is an experience that shapes us in a way. Good or bad, everything has the possibility of a positive outcome in the long run. Because we can learn something in everything we do, and experience. The moral of the story.

My Interpretation

I definitely understand what you're getting at Fearless and I agree.

But as for a different interpretation:

Maybe the song is about how people put up a 'front', if you will, or a charade [i think in this song it is directed towards a religious one] on the outside to fit in or to look cool [the walls of a church don't make it holy]; you're insecure so you put on the charade. And inside you feel nothing. You are always talking, but you never say what you truly feel [speaking aloud]. It's the real you that defines who you are. Then add in Fearless' part and thats about it. Just a stab in the dark.

Anybody have any interpretations for "Don't excuse yourself from life today on the pretense of your past"?

This line means that you shouldn't use something that happened to you in the past as an excuse for making the wrong decision today. You may have been wronged before but that doesn't mean your morals should be relative. You should seek to always do as Christ would.

look i know theyre religious, but why do you have to bring christ into that line? it isnt referenced directly. the line just means, dont let something in your past dictate how you live your life in the present. dont use it as an excuse for your behavior. (dont excuse yourself from life today)
