Ingrid's pretty straight-forward about the idea of "maybe," but I truly believe that she knows that this significant other will never come back. It's just hopeless, wishful thinking. You know, when you say "maybe" about something, but you know in your heart that it's not gonna happen. Besides that, my basic interpretation of this song is that she misses this person so much, and nostalgia is not on her side. Another good song by Ingrid, but so sad :(

I think it's about really loving someone who has left you. At least the relationship isn't intact and she is struggeling with their distance/breakup. And she can't let him go, but she realises that she has to to be happy. She doesn't want to say goodbye but she will because for now it's the only right thing for both of them. But only because she lets go, it doesn't mean that she doensn't loves him with all her heart and hopes that there will be the right time one day. That he will come back to her. But until that day, she will move on with her life.

I totally can relate to the song. My boyfriend broke up with me some month ago and I cannot let go, because he just won't tell me that it is finally over, he always leaves me hoping. And maybe when I menage to let go and move on, and least with everything but relationships, he will realise that he wants to come back. And maybe in the future he will. Who knows?

'The only way to really know is to really let it go' or 'I'm gonna wash away everything 'till you come home to me'.

I think those two lines describe the song the best. If the hope is actually lost or they really belong together is annother thing and I think everybody has to answer it for themselves.

For me, it's more about liking someone who you can't be with, but waiting and letting it go for a little bit, because later on in life, they might come out and it will work out that time.

Look carefully she is stating right off the bat that she doesnt want to be the one to break it off but she has to for herself because she is not happy and being held back from what she wants to do in life. And she knows that this guy she is letting go of is the one she really loves and knows that it is meant to be and she is taking the risk that one day they will meet again in the future upon fate. She will watch him from a distance as he excels in life and fufills his dreams and becomes someone special ("while you fly")

I love this song. I was so happy tonight when it cam on itunes. it's really catchy and Ingrid has such a beautiful voice. to me is seems slightly different than her other stuff though. I still love it though. I think it's about being in a relationship that didn't work out and still thinking about that person all the time and still hoping for them to come back to you and having things being the way they used to be.

Ya this song is really catchy, Ingrid's voice kind of reminded me of Shawn Colvin at first. Anyway, i think it's about how you can be so desperate to fix the relationship and you feel the only way to do it is to let them go so they can come back to you in a different time and place.

You always hope for her to come back. You just don't know when to let her go. Damn, good song Ingrid.

the meaning is pretty straightforward.

how do you ever really let go of someone if you're hoping they'll come back in the future? this song has real meaning to my life right now... but that's what i'm struggling with. i can't let go while i'm hoping for it in the distant future... my problem is really believing that it'll happen in the future... i kind of agree that maybe usually means no... so then she's saying maybe b/c that's what she wants to believe... needs to believe even... even though she knows it might not happen... if she doesn't believe that when writing this i'd like to know exactly how she let go while hoping for a future... this song and ben harper's walk away are all i listen to at the moment...

I love this song. This is totally my relationship right now. I'm very much in love with this guy I've been dating for 9 months but he's pursuing his dreams. I'm not sure how much longer it will go because in a year he'll graduate and will be training to be a USAF pilot. He's brilliant, beautiful, and ambitious, and they're eager to have him fighting in the sky. He plans on taking a six year contract overseas and I doubt I'll see him for a very long time after that.

He'll literally be 'flying above me as I lay on the pavement'. Secretly, I'd wait for him forever how long he'd need.

Someone told me "If you love them, let them go. If they come back, then you'll know." I really hope he comes back to me.
