The Tip of the Iceberg Lyrics

Welcome back Winter once again
And put on your warm fuzzy sweater
'Cause you'll feel much better when
The snowflakes fall gently to the ground
The temperature drops and your shivers
Freeze all the rivers around
But I keep you warm

If speeds a pro,
Inertia must be a con
'Cause the cold wind blows
At precise rates
When I've got my ice skates on

If all the roads were paved with ice
That wouldn't thaw or crack
I could skate from Maine to Nebraska
Then on to Alaska and back
'Cause you keep me warm

Peer over the edge
Can you see me?
Rivulets flow from your eyes
Paint runs from your mouth like a waterfall
And your lungs crystallize
I'll travel the sub-zero tundra
I'll break glaciers and frozen lakes
And that's just the tip of the iceberg
I'll do whatever it takes to change

Farewell powdery paradise
We'd rather skate on the thinnest ice
Fingers failed us before they froze
Frostbite bit down on all our toes

Snow drifts build up and enfold us
As we wait in this winter storm
So we snuggle close in the darkness
And keep each other so warm

Love the part where the music fades out then in again at "And your lungs crystallize"!

"And put on your warm fuzzy sweater 'Cause you'll feel much better" that makes me think of Jefferson Aero Plane "'Cause when it's colder, I feel much better. when I cry on my own shoulder, just throw on a sweater and go"

He and Matt Thiessen are friends. Thiessen provided background vocals on a few of the songs on Ocean Eyes. You can tell Adam is heavily influenced by Thiessen/Relient K. In the song Dental Care he says, "Golf and alcohol don't mix, and that's why I don't drink and drive." That's such a Thiessen thing, especially from Relient K's earlier stuff.

I took the 3 most powerful and descriptive sections that illustrate my views on this song. I love this song, and my meaning might not be the 'right ' one, but I think it fits. What I put in [] is what I picture a music video would do to explain some of the more cryptic lyrics.

"If all the roads were paved with ice That wouldn't thaw or crack I could skate from Maine to Nebraska Then on to Alaska and back 'Cause you keep me warm"

He can do anything with her at his back. She supports him and he feels invincible. This is something that he loves, but she doesn't. He can't see that supporting him drains her. In the song it is skating.

"Peer over the edge Can you see me?-----------------------------------[She is passed out in the shower] Rivulets flow from your eyes Paint runs from your mouth like a waterfall-------[Blood on the sink] And your lungs crystallize------------------------[Meth pipe] I'll travel the sub-zero tundra I'll break glaciers and frozen lakes--------------[Take her to the hospital] And that's just the tip of the iceberg I'll do whatever it takes to change"

She couldn't handle giving him all her support. She turned to something else, something destructive. I see that as being drugs. It could be anything.

"Farewell powdery paradise We'd rather skate on the thinnest ice Fingers failed us before they froze Frostbite bit down on all our toes

Snow drifts build up and enfold us As we wait in this winter storm So we snuggle close in the darkness And keep each other so warm"

He gives up 'skating' and decides to focus on her more. He is willing to give up ehat he loves to support her, like she was in the beginning. They focus on eachother rather something external, thier love flourishes.

My Interpretation

Not trying to be an ass, but I don't think Meth is anything Adam Young would write about, he's a very positive, vibrant guy, and I don't think he'd focus on something like that.

i don't think peer over the edge means that she fell in a shower... i think look over the edge means that she's on drugs, but if she tries hard enough she can see that adam wants to help her and she's willing to let him.. i can't really explain it, but i think you get what i mean...

i think you're on the right track anyway though. idk what the beginning means... but "POWDERY paradise"? yeah, drugs. "we'd rather skate on the thinnest ice" they'd rather take a chance in facing their problems then avoiding them with drugs

"Snow drifts build up and enfold us As we wait in this winter storm So we snuggle close in the darkness And keep each other so warm "

it basically means that even though there are still tough times, she/he won't turn to drugs because adam is there to help him/her

//Welcome back Winter once again And put on your warm fuzzy sweater 'Cause you'll feel much better when The snowflakes fall gently to the ground The temperature drops and your shivers Freeze all the rivers around But I keep you warm//

Maybe She is the winter, she and everything around her is cold. But he is the only one who can break her ice and find some warmness in her..

//I'll travel the sub-zero tundra I'll break glaciers and frozen lakes And that's just the tip of the iceberg I'll do whatever it takes to change//

He will do everything necessary to reach her heart, also called "The tip of the iceberg".

//Farewell powdery paradise We'd rather skate on the thinnest ice//

He preffers being with her, in her ice

//So we snuggle close in the darkness And keep each other so warm//

Maybe she is not that cold after all

Adam himself said: "The song Tip of the Iceberg is a song about growing up and wishing you were somewhere else, and maybe suddenly realizing that you’ve wasted a good piece of your life. It’s about learning not to take things for granted and really being deliberate and intentional about living life as if the day was your last, and so it’s really about appreciating all that’s around you."

I've never really thought of it that way, but maybe.

I hear a number of drug references in the song:

  • warm fuzzy
  • feel much better
  • speed
  • crystallize
  • powdery paradise

And this part sounds like a life-threatening crisis: Peer over the edge Can you see me?

The lyrics are idealistic and escapist in the first part, until the crisis, after which the song builds to its climax. He has reached a turning point, and says "I'll do whatever it takes to change."

After this, he faces reality, as he says "farewell powdery paradise." This is risky, and scary: "the thinnest ice," and is full of hardships, which are the frozen fingers, the frostbitten toes, the winter storm, and darkness. But it's better, because in the end, they "keep each other so warm."

Haha, nice interpretation, but I kind of doubt doubt Owl City would write a song about drugs =)

Adam Young is a scary person. He may not have done drugs, but he's describing them quite accurately. Christian =/= doesn't write songs about drugs or stuff related to drugs. Bravo baxtr.

I agree that its about a relationship, and probably some sort of drug problem, but I believe this song is a duet, just he sings it solo.

Welcome back Winter once again And put on your warm fuzzy sweater 'Cause you'll feel much better when The snowflakes fall gently to the ground The temperature drops and your shivers Freeze all the rivers around But I keep you warm

  • The guy sings this, they're just having a cute moment

If speeds a pro, Inertia must be a con 'Cause the cold wind blows At precise rates When I've got my ice skates on

If all the roads were paved with ice That wouldn't thaw or crack I could skate from Maine to Nebraska Then on to Alaska and back 'Cause you keep me warm -The girl sings these two sections

--In between these two sections, the guy realizes the girls drug problems, and gets angry

Peer over the edge Can you see me? Rivulets flow from your eyes Paint runs from your mouth like a waterfall And your lungs crystallize -This part is sang by the guy, yelling at the girl and confronting her I'll travel the sub-zero tundra I'll break glaciers and frozen lakes And that's just the tip of the iceberg I'll do whatever it takes to change -This is sang by the girl, begging the guy and saying she doesn't wanna be like this anymore, and reall really wants to change

Farewell powdery paradise We'd rather skate on the thinnest ice Fingers failed us before they froze Frostbite bit down on all our toes -Perhaps this is sang by both, talking about how she wants to change, and it wont be an easy tasks, but they dont care and would rather be on this route

Snow drifts build up and enfold us - Sang by the guy As we wait in this winter storm - Sang by the girl So we snuggle close in the darkness - Sang by the guy And keep each other so warm - Sang by the girl -This section is talking about how they're going through it and yes its extremely tough, but they'll get through it together, helping one another.

Farewell powdery paradise <Crack? We'd rather skate on the thinnest ice <Rather be more risky? Fingers failed us before they froze <Meth... maybe?

Just a possibility. If this is true, the other lyrics make sense too.
